Being an animal rescuer means always being prepared for the unexpected. You never know when your next mission will arise. One day, the dedicated team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, led by Donna Lochmann, hurried to the streets to assist dogs in distress before an impending storm, only to uncover a heartbreaking sight.
Peeking Behind The Benches

A tiny dog gazed at them from behind the benches, his owners having tied him to a picnic table, likely abandoning him there. No one knows how long he had suffered without food or water, but the poor pup appeared to be in terrible condition. He looked frightened and traumatized—a poignant reminder of the pain of abandonment.

On top of that, the dog’s fur was completely infested with ringworms. “It rained on and off this week, with thunderstorms in St. Louis. This little puppy was tied up and left at a park, and he’s COVERED in ringworm,” the rescue detailed in a Facebook post.
Initially, the puppy kept his distance and barked in fear, desperately trying to fend off the rescuers.

Fortunately, it didn’t take long for the team to gain his trust with gentle words and some treats. They gradually placed a leash around his neck and took him to their vehicle, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
“He was so brave when we first approached, but as soon as we got in the Jeep, he curled up on Donna’s lap and let out a deep sigh – that sigh said so much,” SRSL shared.
He instantly morphed into a sweet lovebug, filled with gratitude for finally being safe.
Off To A New Start

Aside from his ringworm infestation, Wilbur, as he was later named, was otherwise healthy. Upon his arrival at SRSL headquarters, he was scheduled for medicated baths.
“He’ll receive medicated baths and will be ready for foster care in just a few days. He’ll never have to face loneliness or muster that level of bravery again,” the rescue announced.
Relieved to be away from the park and out of the rain, Wilbur required some time to adjust to his new environment, yet it was clear he was happy.
Once he’s ready, Wilbur will embark on a new journey in a foster home, eagerly waiting to find a family that is perfect for him.
