Being an animal rescuer means being prepared for the unexpected at all times. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, a new mission can arise. One day, the dedicated team of Stray Rescue of St. Louis, led by Donna Lochmann, hurried to assist dogs in need before an impending rainstorm, only to uncover something truly heartbreaking.
Peeking Behind The Benches
A tiny dog timidly glanced at them from behind the benches. As they moved closer, the team realized his owners had tied him to a picnic table and likely abandoned him there. Nobody knows how long he had suffered without food or water, but the pup was undeniably in bad shape, traumatized by the experience of being left behind by those he trusted.
To make matters worse, the dog’s fur was completely infested with ringworm. “It rained on and off this week, with some thunderstorms here in St. Louis. This little puppy was tied up and left at a park, and he’s COVERED in ringworm,” the rescue shared in a Facebook post.
Initially, the puppy kept his distance, barking loudly in fear, desperately trying to fend off the rescuers. However, the team quickly gained his trust with gentle words and treats and managed to secure a leash around his neck, setting the stage for his new life.
“He was so brave when we first approached, but as soon as we got in the Jeep, he curled up on Donna’s lap and let out a deep sigh – that sigh conveyed so much,” SRSL reflected.
The frightened pup swiftly transformed into a sweet lovebug, relieved to finally be safe.
Off To A New Start
Aside from the ringworm, the pup had no other health issues. Upon reaching SRSL headquarters, the puppy, later named Wilbur, was given medicated baths. “He’ll receive medicated baths and will be ready for foster care in just a few short days. He’ll never have to feel lonely or muster up that much bravery ever again,” the rescue assured.
Delighted to have escaped the park and the rain, Wilbur still required time to adjust to his new surroundings, but he was evidently happy.
When he is ready, Wilbur will embark on a new journey in a foster home, hoping to find the perfect family he deserves.
