For both a dog and its owner, few hardships are greater than an unexpected separation. While some owners sadly abandon their furry friends, those whose pets go missing under mysterious circumstances would do anything to bring them back home.
A family from San Diego, California, experienced this heartache when their dog, Mishka, suddenly disappeared. They were heartbroken, as life without their cherished companion felt unimaginable.
But instead of succumbing to despair, they harnessed their determination to find her.
The Happiest Call

As reported by the Associated Press, the Houman family lost track of Mishka while visiting Mehrad’s auto body shop in San Diego.
Elizabeth and Mehrad promptly alerted the Humane Society, shared Mishka’s microchip details, and distributed “missing dog” flyers. They also crafted an emotional Facebook post featuring her photo and the words “MISSING!!”
Unfortunately, after all their attempts, they heard nothing from Mishka for six long months. Then, in March 2024, they received a call from the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society (GPAAS) based in Harper Woods, Michigan.
The news brought immense joy: their long-lost dog had been found!
A resident raised the alarm with the Harper Woods police about a stray dog in her area, leading the police to turn the pup over to GPAAS. Upon checking her microchip, they confirmed that it was indeed Mishka.
On the day they received the call, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit, the Houmans were on their way to Minneapolis to visit family. As soon as they landed, a thrilled Mehrad embarked on the 10-hour journey from Minneapolis to Harper Woods to reclaim her.
Sweetest Reunion And A New Skill
The moment Mehrad arrived at the GPAAS facility in Harper Woods, he was instantly reunited with Mishka. It was a breathtaking experience – a culmination of months filled with anxiety and concern.
Mishka underwent a health check by Michigan veterinarian, Nancy Pillsbury. She confirmed the dog was in excellent condition, indicating that someone had cared for her well. Ready to return home.
“After a 10-hour drive, Mishka was reunited with the rest of her family in Minneapolis,” the GPAAS video shared.
When Mishka appeared from the car, Mehrad, Elizabeth, and their family radiated joy. It was a true celebration of love that only our furry friends can evoke.
What astonished the Houman family the most was that Mishka had learned a new trick during her time away.
“Someone taught her to sit. Now she sits,” Elizabeth shared in her interview with FOX 2 Detroit.
While they suspected someone had taken Mishka from California to Michigan, the whole situation remained a mystery. However, they chose to focus on cherishing every moment with their beloved dog.
“It’s a complete miracle, and we never lost hope. I always believed we would bring her home,” Elizabeth joyfully exclaimed at the conclusion of her story.
