Every dog is unique and requires a tailored approach to thrive. This can be challenging for owners who may not have ample time to dedicate to their pets. In such cases, dog daycare emerges as a viable option, where skilled caretakers understand canine needs and provide socialization opportunities with fellow dogs. However, this arrangement may not work for every dog, as illustrated by a Michigan owner who discovered her dog’s true preferences.
When Nikki Sykora, a 24-year-old full-time student at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, took her Mini Bernedoodle, Maisy, to daycare, she expected the pup to socialize happily. While driving, Nikki noticed that Maisy was full of joy, sporting a constant smile, reinforcing Nikki’s belief that the daycare would be a great fit.
People-Oriented Dog

After dropping Maisy off, Nikki checked the daycare’s camera to see how her pup was doing. To her surprise, she found Maisy sitting alone in a corner instead of mingling with the other dogs. This revelation, though disappointing, made sense upon reflection; Maisy had always been more inclined to bond with people rather than other dogs. It became evident when she spent more time with the pet sitters than her canine peers. Simply put, Maisy was not your typical dog.
Numerous Reactions
Realizing an opportunity to share Maisy’s experience, Nikki posted a clip on TikTok under her handle @niknak272727, showcasing her dog’s reaction to daycare. The clip featured text stating, “Signed my puppy up for day-care so she can start making friends and socialize,” with a caption declaring “She’s 100% my daughter though lol.” Nikki was prepared for attention but never anticipated the extent of the response it would receive.
Comments flowed in, including: “She’s protecting her peace 🥰,” and “I remember bringing my Shih Tzu to the dog park and I sat on a bench to watch him play with other dogs only for him to sit next to me and watch the dogs as well 😂,” along with “My puppies’ report card said ‘not interested in playing with the other kids’ once😭.” Though Maisy expressed disinterest in playing with other dogs, Nikki remained persistent, bringing her to daycare twice weekly. Gradually, Maisy began to venture out from her corner to engage with other dogs, marking a significant improvement!
