In Michigan, the Harbor Humane Society faces the unfortunate reality of animals being abandoned at their entrance. To combat this, they put up a clear sign stating that dumping animals is prohibited: “Do not abandon an animal here. Wait until business hours. No fee for bringing an animal to HHS. For the sake of the animal, please be humane.” This message was reiterated with another sign placed behind the shelter near a picnic table.
Heartbreaking Find
One morning, as a worker arrived at the shelter, everything seemed normal at the front. However, at the back, they were met with a shocking sight: a tiny puppy tied to the “do not abandon animals” sign, likely left there overnight. Security footage confirmed that the puppy, named Trixie, had been left around 9 p.m. and was alone for over 11 hours until discovered at 7:30 a.m.

Describing Trixie’s initial state, Jen Nuernberg, director of marketing and strategic initiatives at Harbor Humane Society, noted, “Initially, she was nervous and scared, barking at her. But once she crouched down and gave her some time, she quickly warmed up and crawled right into her lap. She has been very friendly ever since!” Trixie spent a lonely night, confused about why she was abandoned, but her spirits lifted once she was inside the shelter, where she was given food and warmth.
The staff, upon arriving and learning Trixie’s story, felt profound heartbreak. Fortunately, tests revealed that Trixie was in good health, albeit somewhat bewildered.

As Jen Self Aulgur, executive director at Harbor Humane Society noted, “When someone abandons an animal without any information, we are just left to guess.” They estimate Trixie to be around 3 to 4 years old but lack details about her past, including her likes and dislikes. The shelter staff hopes her previous owners will step forward to provide vital information to aid in finding Trixie the perfect home.
“This pup deserves to have her story and history known. We do not want to shame or get you in trouble — we just want to help this poor pup,” stated Self Aulgur.

Currently, Trixie enjoys the care of dedicated staff who ensure she has everything she needs. After some time, she will be available for adoption, but for now, she is receiving all the love and attention she deserves.
Final Word
This story serves as a poignant reminder of why abandoning pets is never acceptable. Animals become deeply attached to their owners and their environments, and any abrupt change can cause significant anxiety.
If you find yourself unable to care for your pets any longer, please do not abandon them. Instead, bring them to your local shelter, introduce them to the staff, and give them a chance at a new life. They truly deserve it!
