As a proud dog owner who discovered their furry soulmate through a rescue group, have you ever felt the urge to delve deeper into their heritage? Sometimes, no matter how much you try, information may be hard to gather. Or perhaps, like Max Matthai from Baltimore, Maryland, you embrace the adventure of a new chapter with your pet without worrying too much about their past. From the first moment Max laid eyes on Louie’s picture with a Texas rescue group, he felt an undeniable urge to adopt him. The bond they formed over nearly two years was unbreakable, as Louie grew to an impressive 70 pounds. Although Max was unsure about Louie’s exact breed, he speculated a mix that included Retriever or Collie, considering Louie’s gorgeous shiny coat and endearing expression that gave him an innocent charm.

Louie’s love for parks, hikes, and swimming only reinforced Max’s initial thoughts about his breed. Curious by nature, Max’s interest peaked when people began commenting on Louie’s striking appearance in photos he shared online. This gave rise to Max’s decision to get Louie tested for his DNA, aiming to unveil the mystery of Louie’s heritage once and for all. But the results were far from what he anticipated!

The DNA Result Is Stunning

The revelation from the DNA test was astonishing for Max; it turned out Louie wasn’t part Retriever or Collie at all. Instead, he was primarily a German Shepherd, being about 30 percent Shepherd, with 20 percent Great Pyrenees and a blend of others in his genetic makeup. This unexpected truth was a game-changer!

“My beautiful boy Louie! He’s a German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix,” Max proudly shared on Reddit.

Once Max disclosed Louie’s true heritage on Reddit, comments from all over poured in.

“I’ve got one of those— all the athleticism and energy of a Shepherd with the resource guarding and barking of a Pyr,” remarked one user.

“Louie is ultra nice and sweet, what a baby he is,” another complemented.

Despite being a working breed and not necessarily a lap dog, Louie’s life remained unchanged; he could now fully embrace his splendid identity! Even as a mixed breed, Louie is 100 percent beloved by his family, relishing every moment of his perfect life and adventures!
