Throughout various life challenges, meaningful connections can form that endure forever. However, during the toughest times, friendships arise that become unbreakable.
Two mother dogs recently shared such experiences, welcoming and nurturing 18 tiny puppies together.
Since then, they have remained utterly inseparable.
Two Mother Dogs Were In A Distressing Situation
At the end of October 2023, the BC SPCA welcomed two mother dogs into their shelter. These dogs had recently given birth to a total of 18 puppies – consisting of two litters with 9 pups each.
When their animal protection officer discovered them on a property, what he found was beyond words.
Alongside caring for their litters alone, these mother dogs were severely malnourished and neglected.
“The dogs were given very little, if any, food,” explained Eileen Drever, senior animal protection officer for the BC SPCA. “It seems the owner left the mothers and puppies outside to survive on their own without visible food or water.”
She also mentioned that the pups were discovered huddled together in an inadequate makeshift doghouse, surrounded by dangers including sharp chicken wire.
No dog could endure such living conditions, much less a mother with puppies to care for.
Thus, swift action was imperative.
They Needed Immediate Care
“When dogs like these arrive, they typically need immediate medical attention and care. They often come in with parasites, are underweight, and may be covered in matted fur and waste, among other issues we frequently see,” remarked the BC SPCA.
Drever stated that the two mothers, named Goldie and Honey, had extremely low body scores of just two out of nine. Their ribs, spines, and hips were prominently visible.
“An animal protection officer noticed the puppies attempting to nurse, but the mothers were so malnourished that they lacked sufficient milk for their large litter,” added Drever.
As a result, veterinarians established a specific refeeding regimen for the mothers. They were provided food and water gradually over time to facilitate their recovery.
The puppies, while also underweight, weren’t as severely impacted as their mothers, achieving a body score of four out of nine.
“The puppies were experiencing diarrhea and showing signs of lethargy,” Drever noted. “In a rare case for such young puppies, one was also dealing with a urinary tract infection requiring antibiotic treatment.”
Despite their challenges, Goldie and Honey, along with their puppies, were gradually but surely recovering.
They Couldn’t Bear to Separate Them
A month later, the BC SPCA shared encouraging news on their official Facebook page.
“Thank you for showing love to these brave moms and their 18 puppies. They will never go hungry again, thanks to you; we are incredibly grateful,” they announced.
The BC SPCA expressed gratitude to the generous individuals who contributed funds for the recovery of these two families. The positive outcomes serve as a reminder that kindness prevails.
In addition, they announced that both the puppies and their mothers were now available for adoption.
However, they emphasized that the shelter would only consider applications from prospective adopters willing to adopt Goldie and Honey together.
These two “Super Moms,” as they have been affectionately named, have endured so much together that their bond has become unbreakable. They are like two halves of a soul, where one cannot exist without the other.
