Malnourished Puppy Endures 12 Hours of Cold on Michigan Porch Before Being Rescued

Date:

On a freezing day, an exhausted and malnourished dog was wandering through a Detroit neighborhood, weakly dragging her paws. Desperately seeking help, she chose a random house, walked into the yard, and lay on the porch, hoping the family would let her in.

The pup, later named Sugar, spent twelve hours on that porch, shivering from the cold and crying for assistance. Eventually, the homeowners contacted Rebel Dogs Detroit for help, and the rescuers quickly raced to her aid, concerned for her well-being.

Sugar Is Grateful To Receive Help

Upon arriving at the scene, the rescue crew found Sugar curled up and shivering on the porch, her tearful eyes speaking volumes. They comforted her with gentle strokes, assuring her that she was safe, and Sugar returned their kindness with grateful kisses.

“When we arrived, she was so grateful, showering us with endless kisses despite how cold and weak she was,” Rebel Dogs Detroit shared on Facebook.

The rescue team provided her with snacks and attached a leash, but due to her frail condition, they carried Sugar to their vehicle. Once she was inside and the car’s heat was on, her trembling slowly began to subside as she realized she was in a safe space.

After a short while, Sugar recognized she was safe and calmed down. The rescuers took her to the vet for a check-up, where it was determined she was heartworm-positive and underweight. Lacking a collar or microchip, her past remained a mystery.

After receiving necessary treatment, Sugar needed a safe, quiet place to recuperate. Rebel Dogs Detroit shared her story online, looking for a foster home, and Leah Carroll responded, eager to help Sugar heal.

With time, Sugar began to decompress in her foster home, showering Leah and her family with love and affection. Leah was captivated by Sugar’s sweet demeanor and hoped she would soon find her forever home.

“She loves humans, is perfect at the groomer (curious about other dogs but shows no aggression), knows how to sit, and is crate/potty trained (though a few accidents occurred due to the stress of her new environment). She is a little love bug looking for someone to snuggle with forever,” Leah shared in a Facebook post.

Sugar continued to flourish in her foster home, constantly seeking affection and wanting to stay close to Leah.

On March 10, 2025, Leah Carroll announced she could no longer foster Sugar due to unexpected health issues. She expressed her hope that someone would open their home to a lovable dog like Sugar, hoping she would soon find a forever home where she would be cherished.
