Some animal cruelty cases are hard to believe; yet, they are harsh realities. Lloyd’s case is a stark reminder of this. At just ten years old, he found himself in a living nightmare, caught in the middle of a divorce, leading to severe neglect. Weighing only 75 pounds—half of his ideal weight—he was a shadow of what a Great Dane should be.
He Didn’t Deserve This

It’s shocking to think that Lloyd was an adult dog, weighing only 75 pounds when he should have been at least 70 pounds heavier. His severe neglect and starvation left Florida’s animal control in disbelief, but thankfully, his suffering eventually came to an end.
Chandra Honican, who owns an equine sanctuary in Kentucky, was moved by Lloyd’s plight and sprang into action to help him. With the support of her friends, she successfully adopted him from the Florida shelter and brought him to her home in Kentucky, where he embarked on a new journey toward recovery.

“Lloyd is officially now a Kentucky dog! We all made it back home safely. He is doing so well, his spirit remains so amazing to watch,” Chandra shared in a Facebook post.
Despite the new beginnings, Lloyd still had an arduous road to recovery ahead of him. His stomach was too compromised for adult dog food, necessitating a specialized meal plan. Due to his weakened state, he could only tolerate wet food. To make matters worse, he had developed bloat, a serious condition that required surgical intervention. Nevertheless, Chandra and her family were committed to helping him.
“It’s hard to even put into words what this dog has been through. It’s even harder to understand how unbelievably skinny he is; pictures just don’t convey it,” she expressed.
Lloyd In A New Home

After several weeks of vet appointments and bloat surgery, Lloyd finally experienced the warmth of his new home—and he adored it! Over time, he exhibited affection, revealing the gentle giant he truly was—a cuddle bug at heart.
“He really is such a joy to be around. He absolutely loves affection; if we could spend hours rubbing on him, that’s what he would prefer,” shared Chandra.
To help him gain weight, Lloyd was fed five small meals a day. Gradually, he started to regain his strength, but he still had a lengthy recovery process ahead. Fortunately, he was showing signs of resilience and engagement rather than feeling shut down or depressed.

Lloyd has embraced his new life in Chandra’s home and revels in the love he receives. He has particularly formed a special bond with her fiancé, becoming inseparable with him. “My fiancé is hands-down Lloyd’s favorite person; he never wants to be apart from him. I think he wishes his humans didn’t have to work,” Chandra noted on Facebook.

As he works toward full recovery, Lloyd spends time with other farm animals, forging new friendships. His resilience continues to amaze Chandra and her fiancé, who are thrilled that Lloyd will never face neglect again. Finally, he is in a loving home, surrounded by care and affection. Wishing you a wonderful journey ahead, Lloyd! Here’s to many happy memories in the years to come!
