Among the countless heartbreaking stories of dogs, Ajax’s tale stands out.
This unfortunate pup spent a decade living joyfully, but in November 2023, tragedy struck. He found himself alone, leaving many who learned of his sorrowful circumstances devastated.
Like millions of other dogs entering animal shelters across the U.S. every year, Ajax is now facing a similar fate.
The Story of Ajax
On December 7th, 2023, The Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago, Illinois, shared Ajax’s story, a Plott Hound mix whose tale has touched many hearts.
This senior dog has always been a loving companion until he was discovered by authorities guarding the body of his deceased owner, who had tragically passed away.
In shock and distress from this traumatic experience, Ajax found himself at the ACS. According to staff, he still hasn’t come to terms with the loss of his beloved human and waits by the kennel door daily, hoping for their return.

Upon scanning his microchip, they discovered that Ajax had been adopted nearly ten years ago from this same Illinois facility, and now he has returned.
Lydia Krupinski, a member of the ACS management team, shared with Newsweek that since Ajax’s heartbreaking return, he has been withdrawn from other dogs.
His appetite has declined, and his thoughts seem consumed by one thing—his former owner.
The caregivers at the shelter have done everything possible to help Ajax heal from this immense sorrow. Despite his lack of enthusiasm in playing with other shelter buddies, they have found that he is a gentle soul who deeply enjoys long cuddle sessions and cozy naps.
A Hopeful Search for a New Home

To date, there have been no applications for Ajax. He is in dire need of a forever home to call his own, especially during his twilight years, along with someone who can help him heal.
“Ajax’s world has been turned upside down. He is now seeking a loving home to spend his golden years,” the ACS team expressed on their social platforms.
However, with Ajax’s story going viral, the team is hopeful that their Plott Hound will find his forever family before Christmas.

The shelter’s post has attracted countless supportive comments from individuals across the nation.
One commenter stated: “I’m sharing and praying for this sweet senior. He deserves all the love and affection.” Another added: “I hope you find someone who will cherish and care for you in your golden years.”
According to Ajax’s caregivers, a calm home with adults would be ideal for him. He needs a patient environment to adapt, but once he settles, he will be ready to thrive!
