Shelter dogs like Bernie spend their days hopeful for a chance to experience a life filled with love. This five-year-old pup has spent six months in the kennel of the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wantagh, New York, eagerly waiting to meet his forever human.
The Pup Is A Hidden Gem
Every time Bernie sees other dogs leave the shelter for their new lives, he wishes to be in their place. The staff at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter adore him, yet they are puzzled as to why he remains overlooked.
“It’s very disheartening. He is such a hidden gem that someone is completely missing out on,” Ashley Behrens, the acting director, shared with The Dodo.
Though some may find Bernie’s size and energy intimidating, his shelter friends believe these traits make him unique. “He is a blast to walk and hang out with in the yard. He loves to play, chew on hard toys, and run around to expel his energy,” Behrens added.
Once a malnourished pup who needed care, Bernie has blossomed into a relaxed and confident dog since his arrival, taking weeks to adjust and thrive.
Bernie Continues Waiting For His Forever Humans
The staff is proud of Bernie’s transformation and believes he would thrive in a home with older teens and adults who can keep him active and teach him good manners. As he patiently awaits his forever family at the shelter, he dreams of life outside those walls.
With all my heart, I hope that Bernie’s waiting will soon come to an end, as he desperately deserves a second chance at happiness.
