This compassionate woman from Harlan, Kentucky, took a different route while running late for work and spotted something peculiar on the road—a moving garbage bag.
A Shocking Surprise
Curious about the unusual sight, Malissa pulled over to investigate, a decision that would turn out to be life-changing. “I took a different route, a little bit quicker; it’s a little back road. And as I’m coming down the road, in the distance I can see a garbage bag moving,” she recounted to The Dodo.
Wondering about the mysterious contents, Malissa slowly approached the bag. Although the opening was tied, it was clear that a living creature inside was desperately trying to escape. Gathering her courage, she tore open the bag and found a little black puppy peering out.
In disbelief, Malissa couldn’t fathom how someone could abandon such an innocent creature in a trash bag. She immediately pulled the poor pup out, relieved to see he had no injuries and was friendly from the moment he was rescued. He couldn’t stop wagging his tail, as if to express his gratitude to the stranger who saved him.
The Unexpected Road To A Furever Home
Malissa and the pup, whom she named Hefty, shared an immediate bond. After saving him, she took him to the vet for a checkup and posted his story on Facebook, hoping to find his owners. Unfortunately, no one came forward. She was left wondering whether the puppy was abandoned by a heartless owner or taken by someone else, but it was clear that whoever did this had intended to harm him.
Fortunately, the right person found Hefty, and that’s what mattered most. In a heartwarming twist, she decided to keep him for good.
Malissa is certain that fate brought her and Hefty together. Taking an unexpected route that day revealed a pup fighting for life in a bag—a miracle she will always remember.
“I absolutely think it was meant to be. It was meant to be for him and meant to be for us too. I feel fortunate that I was there at the right time and at the right place,” she said.
Today, Hefty is a big boy, leaving behind his terrible past. He relishes every moment spent with Malissa and his new family, embodying happiness. Once an abandoned puppy in a trash bag, Hefty now enjoys the life he always longed for!
