A few years back, Lieschen O’Neill visited the Lawrence Humane Society in Kansas, initially just to look. However, as she puts it, “nobody goes to the Humane Society just to look.” True to her words, Lieschen fell in love with a dog and brought her home. Dubbed Belle, this dog transformed Lieschen’s life significantly.
Belle is no ordinary rescue dog; her unique appearance only enhances the affection people feel for her. When she was about a year old and nearing her adult size, Lieschen’s family began noticing that Belle was different. While she always had a distinct look, it became even more apparent as she matured, especially due to her eyes, which seemed to give her a perpetually surprised expression.
Meet Belle

Upon noticing Belle’s unique eyes, her family took her to the vet, who mentioned that she had likely been stuck in the birth canal during delivery. This caused her muscles to develop differently, resulting in her eyes appearing slightly bug-eyed, though she is completely healthy. “Everything was kind of pulled back a little bit. So her eyes kind of look a little bit bug-eyed, but everything’s there and she’s totally fine,” Belle’s mom shared with We Love Animals. While her eyes may occasionally dry out, her family has prescribed eye drops to help keep her comfortable.
Unique And Beautiful

When Lieschen first encountered Belle in her kennel at the Humane Society, Belle quickly approached, pressing her face against the door, full of energy and eagerness for affection. “She just jumped up in my lap, licked my face, and at that moment, we knew we were going home with Belle. It was a great day,” Lieschen recalled. Now, they cannot imagine life without Belle, who has become such an integral part of their family.

To Lieschen and her family, Belle is the best dog they could have wished for, despite her unique appearance. She is an incredible companion: an excellent listener and, above all, the best dog one could ask for. One of Belle’s greatest joys is her love for slippers.
