Cola’s journey has been far from straightforward.
This delightful girl, who walks on just two legs, has faced considerable challenges throughout her life. After being subjected to abuse and neglect by her former owners, Cola missed out on knowing the warmth of genuine love.
Then, unexpectedly, a miracle occurred.
The compassionate rescuers in New York stepped in to give Cola the care she desperately needed. In return, she showered them with infectious joy and remarkable resilience, leaving everyone astonished.
This is the story of her resilience!
Cola’s Heartbreaking Past
Prior to joining Twenty Paws Rescue in New York, Cola was saved by Kannan Animal Welfare, along with her brother, who, tragically, did not survive.
Cola’s past involved tremendous struggles, including the amputation of her back legs.
She spent years under the care of KAW in hopes of starting anew. Unfortunately, despite her efforts, that opportunity never materialized, leading TPR to give her a shot at a better life.
“Our little amputee has faced many challenges due to severe abuse. She’s a fighter on a path to a much brighter life! She is a stunning and clever two-legged girl filled with love to share,” remarked the rescue team from New York City in a Facebook post.
Initially, Cola was quite shy and reserved due to her challenging past, hesitant to engage with others until she began to trust her new environment.
Thanks to a caring team dedicated to helping her adjust, Cola gradually began to exhibit her joyful spirit.
In a matter of weeks, Cola opened up to her caregivers and furry companions.
Her capacity to adapt to her friends with ease, despite only having two legs, truly amazed everyone. Cola became the most lively and playful dog in foster care.
Overcoming the Odds
Cola, indeed, can do it all!
She runs, navigates stairs, and relishes playtime with her furry companions just like any other dog. Her body has adapted beautifully to her new situation, and Cola is intent on making each day an extraordinary one.
“She doesn’t need assistance to express herself, can manage stairs, and runs around… She’s brilliant,” noted TPR.
Nevertheless, her spirited energy and nimbleness come with a caveat. Her caregivers have noticed Cola experiencing chronic pain, prompting them to secure a wheelchair for her. Unfortunately, it has not proven to be sufficient for her comfort.
The veterinary team has determined that Cola’s back contains specific fusions that prevent her from utilizing a wheelchair.
“Although she has a wheelchair, she cannot use it due to this fusion. She’s currently undergoing rehabilitation to strengthen her front joints, while we continue to explore other mobility solutions,” shared the rescue team.
This is why her caregivers are diligently working on a custom 3D-printed wheelchair specifically for this brave pup. In partnership with their collaborators, TPR is committed to finding the best mobility solution for Cola, as she wholeheartedly deserves it!
The greater challenge, however, lies in the fact that Cola still hasn’t discovered her forever home. Currently in foster care in Connecticut, her greatest wish is to find a loving family that will provide her with the affection she has longed for.
