Winnie, a Great Dane residing in Kansas, never realized she could form bonds with other animals until two orphaned kittens unexpectedly entered her life.
Before their arrival, Winnie’s world revolved around her owner, Lisa, and the humans in her household. She wasn’t particularly fond of other dogs and had little experience in building friendships with fellow furry companions.
At that point, Winnie was an extremely reactive dog—but then everything changed!
Winnie Stunned Everyone
Winnie isn’t just any dog. She’s quirky, affectionate towards humans, and keeps her family entertained. However, this Great Dane has often struggled to connect with other animals.
Although her owners have tried various strategies to help her, much of Winnie’s socialization issues stem from her unfortunate breeding history.
That said, she’s definitely showing signs of improvement!
“She adores playing with other dogs and holds no malice whatsoever. But at home, in her territory—with her food, treats, bed, and toys—she transforms into an entirely different dog,” Lisa shares in an Instagram post.
Thanks to her mother’s persistence and ongoing training, Winnie had very few episodes last year.
However, there are two special furballs with whom Winnie shares an innate bond…almost like a maternal instinct! They are her two newly-fostered orphan kittens!
When Lisa and her family introduced these tiny feline siblings into their home, they were unsure of how Winnie would respond. They hoped she would accept them at the very least, but this resilient girl astonished them!
Not only did she embrace the two orphans—she essentially adopted them as her own!
Witnessing the incredible bond Winnie formed with the kittens left this Kansas City family in awe!
“I’m utterly amazed at how Winnie is so attached to these kittens,” Lisa shared on Instagram.
There was something instinctive within Winnie that transformed her into a caring and gentle figure around her little siblings. She continuously looked after them, gently sniffed them, and lavished them with warm kisses and cuddles.
The kittens often cuddled up next to her in their crate, falling asleep together—a truly heartwarming scene to behold! Once a dog prone to reactivity over nearly everything, Winnie found her calm with the kittens—their presence soothing her soul.
Winnie Discovered Her Calling as a Foster Mom
Winnie’s newfound affection for the kittens is something her family hopes to cherish.
Sadly, due to the number of pets in their household, Lisa and her husband cannot retain the kittens. They have already found a forever home for one, and the other will follow suit soon.
“Winnie said farewell to one of her little ones this evening. He’s off to enjoy life with his new family,” shared Lisa.
Nonetheless, to allow Winnie to continue expressing her nurturing side, her owners plan to keep fostering kittens in need.
Winnie has demonstrated remarkable fostering abilities, so not allowing her to mother other feline companions would be a missed opportunity.
For now, Winnie has relished her time with the two kittens, but she’s certainly looking forward to many more fulfilling fostering experiences in the future!
Her hidden talent has emerged, and she’s eager to utilize it as often as possible!
