The 14-year-old Chihuahua, now named Chester, had retreated into a corner of his kennel, dreaming of a happier life with loving humans. One day, B.A.A.R.K. Dog Rescue noticed him and decided to change his life for the better. They contacted Leech and secured a temporary home for Chester, where he could finally feel the love and appreciation he deserved.

Leech was thrilled to welcome Chester into her home, where her pack of senior dogs was eager to shower him with love. “He’s got a few lumps and bumps, [long] nails and is a bit off on the seeing and hearing. After a bath, he joined the ‘Chi Mafia’ effortlessly and is walking around with the big guys like he owns the place,” Leech shared in a Facebook post.

Prior to joining Leech’s family, Chester underwent a thorough medical examination, revealing a severe heart murmur and multiple rotten teeth. Not letting his medical condition dampen his newfound happiness, “[He’s] the cutest little old man with the stinkiest breath ever,” Leech commented in a post.

One Day At A Time

Fortunately, Chester soon received extensive dental care and started treatment for his heart condition, improving his quality of life. However, just as Leech began receiving adoption offers for him, Chester fell ill. Further tests revealed a kidney infection, but thankfully, the doctors managed to stabilize him, prompting Leech to make a challenging decision. Despite her desire to see him in a loving home, she realized it was best for Chester to remain under her care. Given her experience with senior pups, Leech knew he would be safest with her.

Despite how much she wanted him to find a home, Leech recognized that Chester’s best interest was to stay with her. “Tonight, he showed us he’s happy to be here by hanging with the crew, begging in the kitchen and eating a good dinner… It’s not the happily-ever-after we pictured for him, but we are honored to be his forever family,” Leech shared on Facebook.

Final Word

Although originally planning to foster Chester temporarily, Leech cherishes every moment with this resilient pup. She diligently monitors his health and maintains his treatments, ensuring he remains happy and healthy. From being a homeless and depressed dog, Chester is now part of a large family dedicated to giving him the best life possible, and he wouldn’t have it any other way! “Here’s to the best part of forever for little Chester…” Leech concluded.
