At 14 years old, the Chihuahua, now named Chester, withdrew into a corner of his kennel, dreaming of a loving home while spending days alone. However, B.A.A.R.K. Dog Rescue recognized his plight and decided to transform his life. After reaching out to Leech, they arranged a temporary home for Chester, offering him the love and affection he so desperately needed.

Leech couldn’t wait to welcome Chester into her home, where her pack of senior dogs was eager to give him the attention he craved. After a thorough bath, Chester, who had a few lumps and bumps along with some challenging vision and hearing issues, seamlessly integrated into what Leech calls the ‘Chi Mafia.’

“He walks around like he owns the place,” Leech shared in a Facebook post.

Prior to entering Leech’s care, Chester underwent a comprehensive medical check-up which revealed a severe heart murmur and several rotten teeth. Yet, his medical conditions did not diminish his newfound joy. “He’s the cutest little old man with the stinkiest breath,” Leech expressed in a post.

One Day At A Time

Fortunately, Chester received necessary dental care and treatment for his heart condition, significantly improving his quality of life. However, just as adoption offers began to come in, Chester fell ill. After further tests revealed a kidney infection, doctors stabilized him, yet this situation put Leech in a challenging position.

While Leech would have loved to see Chester adopted, it became clear that his best chance was to stay with her. With her extensive experience caring for senior pups, she felt Chester would be safest in her care. “Tonight, he showed us he’s happy to be here by hanging with the crew, begging in the kitchen and enjoying a good dinner… It’s not the happily-ever-after we envisioned, but we are honored to be his forever family,” she wrote on Facebook.

Final Word

Though fostering Chester wasn’t part of her original plan, Leech cherishes every moment with this resilient pup. She diligently monitors his health and follows up with his treatments to ensure he remains happy and healthy.

This once homeless, despondent dog is now cherished as part of a loving family that guarantees he lives his best life, and Chester wouldn’t want it any other way! “Here’s to the best part of forever for little Chester…” Leech concluded.
