Heroic Rescue Dog Saves His Owner’s Life Just Days After Adoption

Date:

Have you ever been curious as to why dogs are referred to as ‘man’s best friend’?

This touching tale of a clever and devoted dog named Peanut will explain it all.

Peanut, a two-year-old Great Dane, has spent a significant portion of his life in a shelter in Albuquerque, eagerly awaiting a loving home.

So, when Peanut’s new owner arrived at the shelter to adopt him, this charming dog vowed to protect and love his dad fiercely. And that’s precisely what he did.

Peanut to the Rescue

Peanut’s new owner, Andrew Budek-Schmuisser, has been suffering from health issues, which often cause him to lose his balance and could lead to dangerous situations.

A friend recommended that Andrew adopt a large dog to provide companionship and assistance in times of need.

Without delay, Andrew went to the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department and adopted the sweet Great Dane, Peanut, on March 9, 2024.

Little did he know that just a day later, that very dog would prove to be his savior.

Peanut, the hero of the story, had only been in his new home for 24 hours when he had to spring into action to help his owner.

Andrew unexpectedly lost his balance, falling and striking his head in the process. He found himself immobilized and unable to breathe, as the fall caused his windpipe to become constricted.

Quick-thinking Peanut sprang into action immediately.

“Then I felt Peanut come behind me. He cleared my airway by straightening my head and then got behind me and gradually pushed me into a sitting position,” Andrew recounted in an interview with KRQE.

This decisive action was vital in saving Andrew’s life, and it seemed Peanut instinctively recognized what was necessary in that critical moment.

A Bond Like No Other

Peanut has remained by Andrew’s side since the incident, and I am certain he will always be his protector.

Andrew is profoundly thankful for having such a remarkable dog.

“I love the dog with all my heart. He saved my life. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him now,” Andrew expressed. “I probably wouldn’t buy him a Ferrari because I don’t think he’d be able to drive it,” he added, injecting a bit of humor.

If not for this incredible dog, Andrew may not have survived. Dogs offer us companionship, but they are far more than that—they’re loyal guardians and lifesavers during our most challenging moments.

This moving account serves as a testament to why dogs are truly ‘man’s best friend.’ If you have the opportunity to adopt one, please consider doing so; just like in this story, that dog may end up being your lifeline—both literally and metaphorically.

According to Andrew, he plans to adopt more dogs in the future. I hope that Peanut enjoys many happy years in his forever home, hopefully without any more accidents.
