Heroic Hikers Rescue Abandoned German Shepherd, Carrying Him 3 Miles Down from LA Trail Summit

Date:

When an individual possesses a generous spirit, they will always discover a path to perform acts of kindness, regardless of the obstacles they face.

Omar, an enthusiastic hiker, connected with a hiking group from Los Angeles, California, called The 5 AM CREW, approximately a year and a half ago. Over that time, these remarkable individuals have scaled several mountain peaks in the early morning hours, encountering all sorts of experiences.

However, nothing prepared them for the extraordinary event on August 20, 2024, when they reached the summit of a Los Angeles trail. On this day, these inspiring hikers demonstrated that there are still individuals in this world with hearts as vast as mountains.

A Unique Rescue Mission

Upon reaching the summit of Griffith Park in Los Angeles, California, the hikers were thrilled at the prospect of resting before traversing back down the trail.

However, their intentions quickly shifted as they noticed a dog lying still in the vicinity. As they approached, it became clear that it was a German Shepherd without a leash or collar, merely a bottle of water by its side.

Uncertain how the dog had ended up there, the hikers were determined to assist. Aware of the dog’s fear, Omar and his team recognized the challenge ahead but devised an efficient rescue strategy.

After trying a fanny pack and a jump rope, they realized these weren’t effective as they struggled to carry the heavy dog for longer than a few seconds. The only option left was a tarp, which had previously been used by one of the hikers, Daniel Martinez, for doing push-ups.

They carefully placed the dog onto the tarp, encircled him, and each hiker grasped a portion of the tarp to lift him and began their descent towards the trailhead.

While the journey typically takes about 45 minutes, it took them at least an hour to return with Hiker, as they affectionately named him. Despite the physical challenge, the hikers took comfort in knowing he was safe in the tarp.

“He appeared like a sultan,” Omar shared in an interview with Newsweek. “He was as happy as can be by the time we reached the bottom.”

Additionally, Omar captured footage of this extraordinary rescue mission and shared it on Instagram through the crew’s handle, @the.5amcrew.

Upon reaching their destination, Hiker was slightly anxious. However, after being fed and given water, he began to understand that these kind-hearted individuals only had his best interests in mind, allowing him to finally relax.

“They Found Each Other”

Once Hiker had fully calmed down and the hikers had taken a breather, they loaded him into Daniel’s car. This crew member promptly transported him to the veterinarian for a health check and to determine if he had a microchip.

Though Hiker’s condition was stable, unfortunately, they could not locate a microchip. Nevertheless, Daniel, the person who rescued Hiker with the tarp, generously volunteered to bring the German Shepherd home with him.

He promised to return Hiker if the rightful owner came forward; however, they planned to ensure that the right owner was contacted first. Until that time, Hiker would reside in Daniel’s household.

A few days have gone by without any responses. However, according to Omar, Hiker is thriving—he has fully integrated into their crew and even joined them on a hike.

The bond between Daniel and Hiker is described as impeccable, clearly indicating that they have formed a strong connection.

“It’s almost as if they chose each other,” Omar joyfully remarked.
