When Kosandra Ramirez, a rescuer at ThisIsHouston, a rescue group in Houston, Texas, learned about a dog in Cleveland needing urgent assistance, she immediately set out to help him. Upon arrival, she found a terrified and emaciated dog curled up under a mobile home, trembling from the cold, with all his bones visible.
The Dog’s Fight For His Life

Realizing the dog had likely never experienced kindness from humans, Ramirez faced a challenging rescue. Yet, she eventually succeeded in bringing Chief, as he was later named, to an emergency hospital. During the ride, Chief fell asleep but woke up confused and agitated. After a thorough examination, the vet suspected he had been hit by a car at some point and discovered Chief suffered from severe anemia and a high white blood cell count.

One night, Chief suffered a seizure, which terrified Ramirez as she thought she’d lost him. Fortunately, the doctors managed to stabilize him. He was later transferred to specialists, who diagnosed him with hepatozoonosis, a rare tick-borne disease that, while incurable, can be managed. Chief was prescribed antibiotics and soon began to feel better.
Discovering Love

After four weeks at the hospital, Chief was discharged and went to live with Ramirez, who fostered him. As Chief started to walk again, she noticed he had developed a limp. Once his strength returned, he underwent femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgery and made a complete recovery. Chief enjoyed playing with his doggy foster siblings, learning how to be a dog.

Despite beginning to trust her, Chief still resisted cuddling with Ramirez. However, through training and her unwavering patience, he slowly regained his confidence and opened his heart to her love.
The Forever Home Of His Dreams

Chief’s transformation was remarkable as he regained weight and became a happy dog. Soon, a loving family adopted him, providing the life he deserved. Initially, he was shy and hid in the bathroom and closet to avoid his new family, needing time to adjust. However, with their unwavering love, Chief realized he was safe. He quickly formed a strong bond with his doggy brother, Lou, and the two enjoyed playful antics together.

The loving dog is now living his best life with his family and doggy brother. Heartfelt thanks to all the compassionate individuals who helped Chief secure the second chance at happiness he truly deserved.
