While out one evening with friends, Maria noticed a tiny puppy named Leo with a local street performer in poor condition. She couldn’t leave him behind and decided to take swift action.
Maria negotiated with the “owner,” offering to buy Leo, and after some back and forth, she made the life-changing decision to rescue him for $340. This moment was not only a surprise but also one of the best decisions she ever made!
She Was Happy To Save Him
Prior to meeting Leo, Maria had already helped many needy puppies, developing a deep affection for dogs. Leo, a puppy so young he shouldn’t have been separated from his mother, stole her heart almost instantly.
After witnessing him eat pizza crusts and sip Mountain Dew, Maria approached his “owner,” understanding his living conditions were far from acceptable, and felt compelled to step in. The street musician initially asked for $500, but after negotiating for an hour, she successfully adopted Leo for $340, thus saving him from a life of neglect.
Interestingly, the street performer claimed Leo was a long-haired Chihuahua, and Maria later found out that this wasn’t the case. “Buying a dog from a random man with a violin downtown for $340 one night thinking he was gonna be cute & sweet,” she shared humorously in a viral TikTok video.
Leo’s appearance, although not what she expected, was decidedly adorable in its own unique way! While not a Chihuahua or a Chi mix, his scruffy look made him all the more lovable.
Ultimately, Maria found the perfect home for Leo with her parents, who had recently lost their 17-year-old dog and had a long-haired Chihuahua named Mila.
“I knew my parents would love him, and their other dog of 17 years passed the year before. My dad was obsessed with him instantly,” Maria shared on TikTok.
It took some time for the two to bond, but eventually, they became inseparable. Leo’s quirky personality blossomed as he aged, and his distinctive, scruffy look added to his charm.

For Maria, saving Leo was a transformative decision. She now enjoys weekly visits to see him thrive in his new home. Recently, he celebrated his second birthday, radiating joy with his new family.
