When a family visited the BARCS Animal Shelter in Baltimore, Maryland, they followed the usual practice of looking through the kennels for a potential new family member. Their daughter, however, wandered off to a kennel containing a dog who remained tucked away in a corner, not coming forward to greet them.
The 16-year-old girl noticed his extreme shyness, and his frightened expression tugged at her heart. She approached the shelter staff to inquire about his background and learned that he had experienced abuse and neglect, resulting in severe physical and emotional trauma. Deeply moved, she pleaded with her parents to adopt him, stating that “her heart couldn’t handle it.”
