Do you know how many dogs end up in shelters every year? A couple of million, that’s for sure, and the number changes from year to year. Last I heard, over 6 million dogs were surrendered to shelters in the USA. That’s 6 million broken hearts! Can you even imagine the pain these dogs endure?
If it wasn’t for animal shelters and rescue organizations, who knows what would happen to those poor pups in need? Unfortunately, the situation is alarming. Shelters, despite their best intentions, can’t operate without proper funding, and sadly, the support from the country is insufficient. Many shelters lack basic necessities like dog food or medical supplies, relying heavily on donations from kind-hearted individuals. These donors form the backbone of every shelter: no donations mean no lives saved, and that’s simply the reality.
One particular shelter in Georgia is always open to donations and even has a box set up outside for those who wish to contribute food and supplies. One morning, the staff discovered an extraordinary gift that could hardly be classified as a necessity but was certainly a remarkable donation. Let’s see what kind of surprise awaited the shelter!
What’s In The Box?

Every weekday at the Moultrie Colquitt County Humane Society (MCCHS) begins early, often before 6 AM. As part of their routine, the staff checks the donation box right outside the shelter. While it’s not always brimming with supplies, on some days, they find a couple of bags of kibble, offering at least a little help.
This particular morning, however, was different. Sure enough, two bags of kibble awaited them, but what surprised them was the discovery of two puppies curled up in the back of the box!
Saved Just In Time

It was a hot summer day in Georgia, and inside the wooden box, the heat must have been unbearable without proper air ventilation. Those unfortunate pups were essentially trapped in a sauna—sweating, panting, and gasping for air. When the staff opened the box, the heat hit them like a wave, and they realized these puppies were saved just in the nick of time. Had they not checked that morning, the outcome could have been devastating.
Upon reviewing the security footage, the staff noticed that someone had left the two pups after 10:30 PM the previous night when no one was at the shelter. The puppies had spent the entire night in the box, anxiously hoping someone would come to their rescue. Fortunately, after a thorough examination, they were found to be in good health, with no visible infections. Their coats looked perfect, resembling typical playful puppies!
They named the two adorable pups Polly and Dolly, and although they were initially shy, their true personalities soon emerged. They were simply thrilled to be alive and safe! One of the shelter staff mentioned,
“They are very playful pups, love attention from people, and enjoy playtime.”
Now around three months old, Polly and Dolly are ready for their forever homes. The MCCHS recently listed them for adoption, and they’re already receiving numerous inquiries about these sweet sisters from the box. It’s clear that these lucky girls will soon find loving families.
The dedicated staff at MCCHS continues to check their donation box regularly, as you never know when another pup might come along unexpectedly.
