Dog rescue organizations across the United States face numerous cases of extreme neglect daily. From pets abandoned in horrific conditions, left to fend for themselves without food or water, to those tied up and kept outdoors for their entire lives – rescuers have encountered every imaginable scenario!
However, stories like Astrid’s evoke strong emotions and can affect anyone deeply.
This young girl from New York came into the shelter as a severely matted dog with overgrown nails, leaving everyone stunned.
This is her journey!
Unclear Background
Astrid was taken to Animal Haven in New York City by an unknown individual who claimed no responsibility for her. According to this person, Astrid’s owner had passed away, leaving her without anyone to care for her.
Unfortunately, most of her past remains unclear, particularly since she was brought in under such distressing circumstances.
“She is in dire condition, and judging by her appearance, it appears she was subjected to severe neglect,” the Animal Haven team shared on Facebook.
It was clear that she had suffered from neglect for a significant portion of her life. She was entirely matted and filthy, and her nails were so overgrown that walking normally was nearly impossible.
Due to her behavior at the shelter (spinning in circles), the staff suspected she had been confined to a small area.
They quickly took her to a veterinarian for an initial health check and then gave her a bath, which turned out to be a transformative grooming experience!
The Perfect Transformation
Just one extensive grooming session helped Astrid begin to reveal her true self and emerge as a whole new dog!
Once she was clean and refreshed, her caregivers wrapped her in a warm jacket, and that’s when her genuine personality began to shine. She felt much more at ease around the staff, although she still required some time to completely unwind.
One of the volunteers, Mindy Liu, chose to foster Astrid in her home until she was ready for a permanent family.
Mindy already had three small-breed dogs – Hanzo Blade of Steel, Kiddo, and Chinta – who embraced Astrid with open paws!
Initially, Astrid was shy since she wasn’t accustomed to receiving love or socializing with other dogs. Despite being unafraid, she showed minimal interest in her new companions.
Astrid also faced challenges with walking and tended to observe from the sidelines. Gradually, however, the situation began to improve!
Within a few weeks, this little girl revealed her delightful personality. She adapted seamlessly to the group, becoming part of the “Fantastic Four!” She loved strolling around the city in a stroller and cuddling inside.
The dogs truly welcomed Astrid into their family, and she relished her time spent with them.
Then came the most incredible news for her foster mom! After months in her foster home, Astrid found her rightful adopter – a loving woman who had a warm home and another dog to be Astrid’s companion.
“This little cutie pie is going to a new home with a lovely lady who has another dog, so she won’t be alone!!! We’re happy for her, but sad for us, though we’re grateful we got to love her,” her foster mom expressed on Instagram.
After enduring so much adversity, this senior girl now has the opportunity to spend her golden years surrounded by loving people. She finally has a family dedicated to her!
