These are challenging times, forcing many to make difficult decisions that sadly affect our beloved pets. More dogs are being left at shelters or abandoned on the streets than ever before. Shelters everywhere are overwhelmed with animals that have been surrendered or left behind, primarily due to economic struggles and job losses that are leaving people feeling hopeless. It’s heartbreaking to see people convince themselves that they can no longer care for their pets.
A case in point is a man from Orlando, Florida, who found himself in dire financial straits and reached a point where he could no longer provide for his treasured pit bull, Lincoln. Feeling desperate, he made the heart-wrenching decision to tie Lincoln to his neighbor’s tree in the middle of the night, leaving behind a note asking the neighbor to care for his beloved dog:
“I am leaving to California to be with my mother and brother during this pandemic. Please take care of Lincoln or find him a good home. I trust you with my baby. I’m sorry.”

Unfortunately, the neighbor was unable to keep Lincoln. Fortunately, a local rescue organization, The Pittie Party of Central Florida (TPPCF), stepped in to help. Mayson Jones, a dedicated volunteer, took Lincoln into her home, giving him love and playtime. Despite missing his owner, Lincoln’s playful spirit remained intact.

Fortunately, there is a silver lining to Lincoln’s story. A woman named Melanie Anderson took him in, caring for him while he awaits a permanent home. Lincoln now enjoys boat rides and sunny naps with his foster family. Sadly, his situation reflects a larger trend where shelters are struggling with an increasing number of pets that are being abandoned.

Organizations like TPPCF are urgently seeking assistance. They need foster families to open their hearts and homes to dogs in need. The rescue organization covers all expenses necessary for the foster family to care for the pet, they expressed on Facebook:
“There is no way we would ever be able to do what we do without the dedication and commitment from foster families. These individuals are the true heroes in rescue!”

By fostering a dog, you’re not only providing a safe haven for a deserving animal, but you’re also enabling shelters to accommodate more pets in need. And who knows? You might just find yourself falling in love and giving a dog their forever home!
