Family Adopts Deaf Dog from Ohio Rescue and Discovers His Unique Quirk

Date:

Every dog owner undoubtedly sees their furry friend as the most remarkable dog in the world. However, I think we can all agree that the canine in today’s tale is extraordinary in an entirely different way.

Mordecai, an incredibly cute dog, faced many challenges during his early years. Thankfully, fortune smiled on him when he joined a family that cherishes all of his unique traits.

Despite having numerous quirks, one clearly stands out.

Lauren and Harrison met Mordecai through an Ohio-based rescue named Speak For The Unspoken. Unfortunately, Mordecai experienced a failed adoption that left him feeling dejected. However, the moment he laid eyes on the couple, it was clear to all three that they were destined for an amazing journey together.

Since Mordecai is deaf, Lauren and Harrison felt they were well-prepared to care for him, having already been the proud parents of two disabled cats.

While Mordecai’s past remains largely a mystery, both his new family and the rescue team sensed that it had been anything but pleasant.

“We could tell just by his behavior that he came from an abusive background in the south, based on the types of people he fears and his reactions,” Lauren explained to GeoBeats.

Nonetheless, Lauren and Harrison were committed to ensuring he would lead a fulfilling life.

An Unusual Dog

Though his owners appreciate that having a deaf dog reduces worries about him being startled by doorbells and fireworks, there are drawbacks.

“If he were to escape, we can’t call him back. We have a GPS tracker on him to address this concern. Also, if he’s in the yard barking, we look like neglectful pet parents since we can’t call him in,” she added.

However, what triggers the most barking from Mordecai is huskies. He’s simply not a fan of them.

“He goes wild, especially around huskies. It typically doesn’t sound like standard barking; we like to describe it as a woman screaming in a horror movie. He’s much louder than he seems to realize, but that’s just part of who he is,” Lauren noted.

Beyond his loud reactions to huskies and his boundless energy, Mordecai is exceptionally clever. To communicate with his family, he quickly learned sign language, treating it just like a game of fetch!

“Overall, he is extremely affectionate. Once he gets familiar with you, he won’t hesitate to curl up beside you. Every day, he approaches the mailman and flops down, eagerly inviting him to pet him,” she shared.

Conclusion

It’s undeniable that Mordecai is an exceptional dog!

After escaping an abusive past to find a family that embraces him just as he is, this lovely pup is truly living his best life.

Well done, Mordecai!
