It can often be challenging to prevent dogs from being inquisitive and exploring their environment. While curiosity is a normal trait, issues can arise when the dog’s explorations go beyond safe boundaries.
Oblivious to potential dangers, a curious dog can inadvertently lead itself and its caretakers into situations with no easy way out.
Nevertheless, if the bond and affection shared are robust, even lengthy periods of separation can’t hinder a heartfelt reunion.
Her Intelligence and Ingenuity Had Serious Consequences
Pakita, a chocolate Labrador, is a remarkably clever dog whose relentless curiosity and eagerness for adventure frequently got the better of her.
Despite her owner, Ariel Naveira’s best efforts to rein in her escapades around the neighborhood, Pakita always managed to find a way to pursue her desires.
One day, while Ariel was at work, Pakita spotted a squirrel and instinctively chased after it, trailing it for a considerable distance until it vanished from view.
Unfortunately, she had wandered too far and lost her way home. She ventured in what she thought was the right direction but ended up straying even further away.
Eventually, she saw a few houses and stopped for a drink in one of the yards, believing that everyone was as friendly as those in her own neighborhood.
Regrettably, that turned out not to be true; the homeowners chased her away, and some children even threw stones at her, frightened of a large, unfamiliar dog.
This experience devastated Pakita as she was unused to such treatment. Consequently, she stopped roaming and curled up in one spot, distressed and longing for her dad whom she missed terribly.
A few neighborhood residents decided to look after her, ensuring both their own safety and hers, and took her to a nearby shelter.
A Different Dog at the Shelter
Upon arrival at the shelter, Pakita was warmly embraced by volunteer Silvia Ferreyra and her team.
They anticipated that Pakita would be thrilled with the kind welcome and care they offered, but sadly, she was incredibly sorrowful and withdrawn instead.
They suspected that this might indicate she had been abandoned, explaining her somber demeanor. However, they believed that with time, she would regain her spirits and eventually find a loving new family.
Regrettably, no matter how much time passed, little seemed to change. Nevertheless, Silvia and her team made every effort to help Pakita adjust.
Many potential adopters gravitated towards puppies, and even those interested in Pakita struggled to connect because of her shyness and reluctance. It was evident she didn’t genuinely seek a new home.
Complicating matters, they couldn’t even capture a clear photograph of her since she refused to look at the camera or make eye contact.
And this continued for an agonizing two years! Yes, you heard that right—two long years!
Eventually, after an immense struggle, Pakita found the strength to gaze into Silvia’s camera for a photo that would be shared on social media, hoping to attract someone.
And then, a glimmer of hope emerged for the shelter.
“Suddenly, we received a message from a woman saying the dog belonged to her son, who had been searching for her!” Ferreyra stated for The Dodo.
They made arrangements for her and her son Ariel to visit the shelter the following day, prompting excitement amongst the entire staff as they eagerly anticipated the joyous occasion.
A Heartfelt Reunion
The long-awaited day finally arrived as Naveira stood anxiously outside the shelter, understandably tense after such a long separation.
Minutes later, Pakita was brought outside. Upon seeing her, Ariel’s smile lit up his face; it was undoubtedly his beloved Pakita, and he had never given up hope despite the years apart.
Despite this, Pakita was still taking in her surroundings cautiously, occasionally glancing at Ariel with hesitation as if she didn’t comprehend the situation or lacked the courage to confront it.
But then, she mustered the courage and approached him. The familiar scent was unmistakable; how could she forget her father’s smell? It was her daddy, and after two long years, they were finally reunited.
The embrace felt eternal, healing the wounds inflicted by two years of separation from one another’s love. They were together again at last.
