If dogs could talk, they’d likely describe happiness as having a loving family and a safe home. Sadly, many dogs, like Chiquitita, a 12-year-old pup, struggle to find the love they deserve. She’s spent over 650 days in search of her forever family.
Chiquitita’s Story

Chiquitita’s journey has been tough; she was previously used as a bait dog in a fighting ring and, after being rescued, faced the challenges of fear and arthritis. With the shelter running out of space, she was placed on the euthanasia list until a compassionate alumni staff member at the Watauga Humane Society intervened to save her.
Upon entering the shelter, it became clear that this sweet dog needed love to overcome her fears. The staff quickly grew fond of her and realized that the shelter environment was not suitable for her. Chiquitita needed a comforting home.
“Shelter life was not for Chiqui. The noises terrified her, the floor was too slick for her comfort, and she was restless. She spent the first two weeks with us hanging out in our admin offices while she adjusted to her new surroundings,” wrote Watauga Humane Society on Facebook.
Chiquitita needed a loving family to show her that she was deserving of affection and care.
Sweet Life In A Loving Foster Home

Fortunately, a loving couple decided to foster Chiquitita, showering her with affection and guidance. She thrived in their care, enjoying couch snuggles and car rides, which significantly transformed her into a happy pup.

To increase her adoption prospects, her wonderful foster parents taught her leash manners and shared her photos with kind strangers during walks. Despite her adorable personality, **Chiquitita remained hopeful for her happy ending**.

Unfortunately, the shelter believed Chiquitita’s long wait for adoption was primarily due to her needing to be the only pet. After her initial foster family moved to a new apartment, she transitioned to another foster home.
The Pup Goes Through A Disappointment

Chiquitita quickly won over the hearts of her new foster family with her sweetness and affectionate nature. She consistently showered them with love and kisses.
In December 2023, her foster family officially adopted her, prompting joyous tears at the shelter as Chiquitita finally found her happiness after 650 days of waiting. Unfortunately, a few months later, her family had to surrender her due to their inability to provide the care she required.
“We strongly believe there is the right home for every shelter pet, but we also recognize that not every pairing is a perfect match,” stated the shelter.

As the North Carolina shelter asked the community to refrain from criticizing Chiquitita’s family for their tough decision, the lovable pup faced disappointment but never lost her hope of finding a true home.
Chiquitita deserves a family that will cherish her and shower her with love. We hope she soon finds the happiness she has sought for so long.
