It remains unclear how a gentle Pit Bull mix from Florida ended up wandering the streets of Michigan. Shivering in the cold, she hoped for someone to notice her. Fortunately, the Humane Society of Midland County came to her aid and brought her to safety.
The pup, named Blue, felt immense relief upon being rescued from the streets. The shelter staff was delighted to discover that Blue had a microchip.
Reaching Out to Blue’s Owner
When they called the phone number linked to the microchip, a woman picked up. The staff was shocked to learn that Blue’s home was in Florida.
The woman explained that Blue had gone missing a week prior, and she was unsure how the one-year-old pup had traveled all the way to Michigan.
The shelter staff was overjoyed to hear that the woman wanted Blue back. They immediately began the search for a volunteer to drive Blue back home.
The shelter shared a heartfelt request on social media. Inspired by Blue’s story, countless individuals offered to assist in reuniting her with her owner.
The Journey to Florida
Stephanie James was chosen to drive the lost pup home.
After returning from her vacation, James and her brother visited the shelter to pick Blue up. The moment she laid eyes on the sweet dog, she was smitten.
The three of them climbed into James’ Chevy Blazer and set off for sunny Florida.
Blue quickly bonded with them. James’ heart melted as the affectionate pup rested her head on her shoulder during the trip, showering them with kisses and love.
After a journey covering 1,300 miles, they finally reached Blue’s owner’s house. Unfortunately, her owner was not home, but her mom welcomed them inside.
Blue instantly recognized her surroundings and eagerly waited to see her owner’s familiar face. Upon her arrival, the joyful pup couldn’t contain herself and started jumping with delight.
Conversations soon turned to how Blue had made her way to Michigan. The owner and her mom revealed that Blue was left in a backyard kennel whenever they were away.
“She’s a very wiggly and intelligent dog. They believe she ventured near the freeway and was picked up by someone,” James remarked.
Unexpected News
After some time, James was taken aback when Blue’s owner suggested they should return Blue to the Michigan shelter.
“She said to me, ‘With my full-time school and job commitments, I can’t take care of the dog. You seem like good people, and Blue really likes you. You’ve cared for her well,’” James recounted.
James was left speechless, wishing the owner had communicated this to the shelter staff at the first opportunity.
James and her brother took Blue back to their car. As they drove away, Blue couldn’t stop glancing back at her former home.
James felt a pang in her heart at the sight of Blue’s sad and bewildered expression.
“We kept saying, ‘It’s going to be alright, Blue, we love you,’”
James reassured herself that returning Blue to Michigan was in the pup’s best interest. She knew that Blue would find a loving home soon.
Despite her desire to provide Blue with a suitable home herself, James already had four rescued dogs. She was certain that Blue wouldn’t remain without a family for long.
On their way back, James reached out to the Humane Society to inform them that the owner no longer wished to keep Blue.
Shortly thereafter, the shelter staff updated their followers on social media regarding Blue’s situation. The heartbreaking news of Blue’s abandonment left her supporters devastated.
Blue Finds Her Forever Home
Before long, the shelter was inundated with applications from loving families eager to adopt Blue.
Just two hours after James and her brother brought Blue back to the shelter, Robert Allison, her new dad, rushed over to meet her.
Having recently lost his cherished Pit Bull, Allison was on the lookout for another furry companion. He was thrilled when he learned about Blue’s story and promptly filled out an adoption application. His excitement peaked when the shelter invited him to meet Blue.
When Allison visited, Blue rushed into his arms, and the connection was instant.
“As soon as I approached, she leaped into my embrace. She took right to me,” Allison recalled.
That very day, Blue was taken to her forever home, where she began to adjust happily.
Blue radiated joy as she settled into her new family, showering them with affectionate kisses every day.
James had the opportunity to visit Blue once again, and their joy at reuniting was palpable.
