Dog Rescued from Storm Now Enjoys a Wonderful Life in Ohio

Date:

The phrase that a dog is a man’s best friend is quite popular. Nonetheless, the profound connection between a person and their dog can only be fully appreciated when observed firsthand.

Fortunately, today’s tale will illustrate just that.

Rescue Mission

Luke rescued Franky more than a decade ago from a hurricane that impacted New Orleans, Louisiana.

With the storm causing significant destruction, many animals were left without homes. Luke recognized this as a chance not only to find a new companion but also to help a needy creature.

Even though he lived far away, Luke connected with a local rescue in New Orleans after spotting a charming puppy on their website.

Feeling a bond with this puppy, Luke made the decision to adopt him. The puppy, whom he named Franky, took the next flight to Ohio where Luke resided.

“I remember picking him up, hugging him, and telling him ‘You are home, I’m your daddy,’” recalled Luke.

Now, nearly two decades later, Luke and Franky are inseparable. Even though Franky is now fifteen years old, deaf, and has arthritis, he hasn’t lost his playful spirit.

Even during his time at the shelter, Franky was initially named Playful, capturing the essence of his joyful and exuberant nature.

I had a name in mind already, but a year later I thought, I should have never changed his name because Playful was just right.

Senior Doggo

The reason behind his deafness remains unknown. Franky’s veterinarians suspect he may have experienced a minor stroke, leading to his hearing loss.

It’s sad because he loved music. He especially enjoyed Bach and cello in the mornings. I would play it for him daily. During playtime, I’d always put on Ride of the Valkyries, an opera piece by Wagner. Even if he was napping, the moment he heard it, he’d jump up, rush to his playroom, and grab his toys.

Franky was thrilled whenever Luke communicated with him. He even picked up numerous words and commands, which made it seem as if he could understand human speech.

Since he can no longer hear, Franky depends on physical contact for reassurance.

If he doesn’t spot me right away, he’s like ‘Where’s dad?’ So I make it a point to give him some physical touch to comfort him.

Franky enjoys the company of both humans and other dogs. Whenever he meets someone new, he has to approach them for a big kiss and hug.

If he doesn’t get a chance to say hello, he gives me that look like ‘What’s up dad? What’s going on?’ So, I’ve learned to stop and say, ‘Hey, nice to meet you. This is my dog. Can you please give him some love too?’

As Franky aged, he acquired a more soulful expression. Yet, even at 15 years old, this senior dog remains quite robust. This is likely due to Luke’s commitment to ensuring Franky maintained his daily exercise throughout their lives together.

Best Friend

In addition to Franky, Luke also rescued another dog named Dino. Dino was quite anxious as he had spent the first nine months of his life on the streets.

However, after he met the cheerful Franky, his demeanor improved immensely. He transformed from being scared and withdrawn into a joyful pup who adored life.

Although Dino has since passed, Franky and Luke will always keep him close in their hearts.

Final Word

Franky has become a vital part of Luke’s life. Together, they have created countless memories filled with affection and joy.

I can hardly recall life before Franky, nor do I want to think of life without him. He will always be my child, and even 20, 30 years from now, he will always be by my side.
