While some might doubt their dogs’ long-term memory, it’s truly remarkable how our furry companions always remember those they love. Even years apart, they can recognize the scent of their cherished owners. Unfortunately, this understanding has a darker side—dogs also retain memories of those who have let them down. This abandonment can impact them severely, with some canines taking months to heal. Roxy, a sweet dog surrendered to a New York shelter, exemplifies this experience. After being let down, she struggled to trust again for weeks.
It Took A Whole Month
Rachel Oldenburger, a volunteer and foster caregiver, encountered Roxy at Four Legs Good in Pomona, New York. With a history of working with traumatized dogs, Rachel understood the importance of taking a gradual approach. Initially, Roxy was reactive, avoiding contact with people and trembling when approached.
“She had many unpleasant experiences with people leading up to her surrender and she was terrified when she was dropped off,” Rachel noted in an Instagram post.
Rachel and Roxy began their relationship with slow, silent walks around the shelter, spending hours simply being together until Roxy finally began to relax. After a couple of weeks, she started accepting treats from Rachel—a significant milestone that culminated on day 19 when Roxy approached Rachel and requested attention for the first time. This was a crucial turning point, and Roxy’s improvements continued from that moment.
By day 35, Roxy was practically a brand-new dog. She welcomed Rachel’s affectionate belly rubs and pets, showing her enjoyment. Gradually, Roxy began to embrace her surroundings—though still timid, she had made significant progress.
Still Looking For A Suitable Home
At this point, Roxy was prepared to give another human a chance, which led to Christina volunteering at the shelter. “Christina began working with Roxy several days a week, and their bond flourished. Roxy blossomed with Christina, her children, and the resident dogs,” Rachel noted.
After weeks of consistency and immense patience, Roxy learned to trust again and began to reveal her true nature—a sweet, loving dog ready to be a family companion.
Christina is incredibly proud of Roxy’s progress, yet she understands that Roxy needs someone to care for her permanently. “Roxy was once a scared, shy dog, and her humans let her down. With me, she’s happy, confident, and affectionate—now she requires a home to keep her that way forever,” Christina shared on Facebook. We’re hopeful that the right adopters are just around the corner, ready to welcome Roxy into her forever home.
