Dog Makes Her Mark by Signing Owners’ Marriage License with a Paw Print in Colorado

Date:

Have you ever come across a law that permits your dog to sign your marriage license in Colorado?

It may sound unbelievable, but it’s completely accurate!

Colorado is among the select states that permit couples to self-solemnize or self-unite when getting married. This essentially means you can wed your partner without needing an officiant or witnesses, should you wish.

So, if you’ve always imagined having your four-legged friend included on your special day, Colorado gives you the perfect chance to realize that wish. Here’s how one couple made it happen…

‘Cece’ The Officiant

When Kristy Biro and Eric Gaidis started planning their wedding, they knew they wanted their cherished dog, ‘Cece,’ to be a part of their celebration.

However, they were uncertain about how to include her.

That’s when they chose to have their wedding at the Maroon Bells in Aspen, Colorado, a state that not only permitted Cece to be present but also allowed her to sign the marriage certificate.

According to a video shared by their photographer, Felicia TeKolste, a five-year-old Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix named ‘Cece’ can be observed paw-printing her owners’ marriage license!

@feliciarenaephotography Did you know your dog can legally sign your marriage license in Colorado?!? Its true. No officiant necessary. This is due to the fact that Colorado allows self-solemnizing marriages, which essentially means that couples can get married without a third-party officiant or witness so couples can technically marry themselves because there’s no required witness signature on the marriage. Leaves the perfect opportunity to include your pup on your big day by having its paw print on your marriage license. . . . .

The bride from 2022 shared with PEOPLE that they chose a “destination wedding with 45 of their closest friends and family.”

With no officiant present (barring Cece), they enlisted their friends and family to support them during the ceremony.

“Our ceremony featured three things we adore: our nearest and dearest, Cece, and the beautiful mountains,” Biro explained. “We always envisaged Cece being part of our wedding, and now we possess a marriage certificate adorned with her paw print to cherish forever.”

Cece played a significant part in their wedding, and she executed her role wonderfully.

Besides marking their marriage license, Cece also dashed down the aisle after her pawrents took their positions, settling quietly beside the best man.

A Beautiful Memory

Cece infused their wedding with a little extra magic, but there was another aspect that was particularly significant to the couple.

“On the day Eric proposed, we found out my father’s cancer from a decade earlier had returned unexpectedly. Throughout our engagement, my dad dealt with frequent medical appointments, several scans, endured a major surgery, and underwent immunotherapy,” Kristy shared with Rocky Mountain Bride.

Two months before the wedding, Kristy’s father was too ill to leave the house.

Miraculously, during their wedding week, he felt healthier than he had all summer, allowing him to be present at the ceremony.

“He even surprised us during the ceremony with a touching speech that ended with him holding up a sign that read ‘It’s about Fn time!’ for everyone to see. Fast-forward to the reception, where I had the chance to share a father-daughter dance I’ll forever cherish,” Kristy remarked.

It’s safe to say their wedding day was indeed the finest day of their lives.
