Dog in Virginia Endures 13 Years on a Chain Before Seizing a Second Chance at Life

Date:

While driving through a neighborhood in West Virginia, rescue advocate Dareth encountered a heartbreaking scene: a sad dog tied outside a family home, shivering in the snow. The dog, later named Buddy, looked around with pleading eyes, as though begging for help. Unable to let the image go, Dareth contacted animal control, but she quickly learned that, unfortunately, chaining a dog was legal in the state.

Refusing To Give Up On Buddy

Dareth was determined to help Buddy, so she spoke to his neighbors and uncovered the sad truth: Buddy had been living with his family for thirteen years, always chained outside. One neighbor even cut a hole in the fence just to feed him. He had managed to escape a couple of times but always returned, knowing no other home, only to be mistreated again. After hearing about Buddy’s miserable life, Dareth decided to confront his owners in hopes of persuading them to surrender him. She knocked on their door several times over two days, but received no response.

Feeling out of options, Dareth took Buddy with her. He melted in her arms, showing gratitude for the rescue. She brought him to the vet, where he was diagnosed with Lyme disease and a severe urinary tract infection. The vet couldn’t determine his exact age, but his worn teeth indicated years of chewing on his metal chain.

Living The Life Of His Dreams

After Dareth shared Buddy’s story on Facebook, his adorable face captured the attention of her friend’s parents, retirees who were considering adopting a senior dog. The moment they saw Buddy, they knew they had to help him, and Dareth was thrilled, believing they would be the perfect family for him. However, adjusting to indoor living was challenging for Buddy, who had spent his entire life outside. At first, he refused to eat from his bowl, so his new parents hand-fed him.

Gradually, Buddy regained his confidence, realizing he finally had loving parents and that life could be beautiful. He now loves his new family and joyfully participates in daily walks and car rides, but worships the comfort of his soft bed and playing with his stuffed toys.

Thank you, Dareth, for rescuing Buddy from neglect and giving him a chance for happiness.
