When Alysse Matlock was driving down a rural road near Noble, Oklahoma, she spotted something fluffy walking down the pavement. As she got closer, she saw that it was a miniature Australian Shepherd. Concerned for its safety, she pulled over to lure it into her car, but the frightened pup ran away instead. Fortunately, Alysse managed to snap a photo and posted it on Facebook that evening, hoping to find the little furball’s owner. Soon enough, others chimed in, recounting their own encounters with the same dog.
Rescue Mission

Despite the flood of responses about sightings of Journey, as she was named, her origin remained a mystery. A few days later, she was spotted in Noble, about 10 miles from Alysse’s initial encounter. With colder weather approaching, concern grew among animal lovers in the town for Journey’s safety and well-being, especially when it was discovered that she was heavily pregnant.
Upon learning this, Alysse ventured out to find Journey, determined to bring her to safety. After three hours of trying to earn Journey’s trust, Alysse had to return home as it grew late.

Finally Safe
The next day, Alysse found Journey peering out from behind a pile of trash, having taken shelter from the cold. Alysse made another attempt to get her into the car, but Journey was still unwilling to cooperate. Another search led Alysse and local volunteers to spot her on a hill, prompting a plan. With collaboration and some hotdogs, they successfully coaxed Journey into the car.
“It was such a relief when she was finally caught. All of us strangers that had stopped on the side of the road that morning started hugging,” Alysse shared with The Dodo.

New Life
With Journey safely in Alysse’s care, she took her straight to the vet, who confirmed that Journey would give birth within the next five to seven days. The following morning, Alysse awoke to soft squeaks—two puppies were already born, with four more arriving shortly after. Journey was now the proud mom of a healthy litter.

In a warm and safe environment, the courageous mama and her puppies finally got the rest they needed, crucial for Journey’s recovery. For now, the little family will remain safe, and if no owners are found, they will be placed for adoption through Noble Now Inc. Friends of Noble Animal Shelter.
A heartfelt thank-you to everyone involved in helping this adorable Aussie find a safe and loving place to give birth to her precious puppies. You are all heroes!
