Harlow, the ‘skeleton’ dog, bravely battled through her struggles, and alongside her owner, Alana, shared her heartwarming tale with the world. Let’s delve into it!
Harlow’s Condition
Harlow has been a cherished member of Alana’s family for many years. This adorable Weimaraner was a joyful companion, but in 2021, her life took a drastic turn.
She began to lose weight unexpectedly, leaving her entire family puzzled. Despite multiple veterinary visits and an array of tests, everything appeared normal.
Harlow was visibly weakening even as she consumed food, and Alana felt helpless in her quest to assist her.
“We could see every rib, every vertebrae, every bone in her legs. No matter how much we tried to feed her, Harlow’s condition continued to worsen,” Alana shared with The Dodo.
Yet, despite her struggles, Harlow maintained her enthusiasm and energy. Her spirit was undiminished, and she had so much love to give!
“Even through everything, Harlow never lost her spark,” says Alana.
The concern weighed heavily on Alana and the family as they feared how long Harlow could sustain this condition. Her health was clearly declining, and it seemed inevitable that she would soon lose all her strength.
The Mystery Finally Unveiled
Eventually, Harlow reached a point where she was completely lethargic and unwell. She stopped eating and drinking, leading her family to the emergency vet multiple times each week.
Harlow had lost her joy, and her family was bracing themselves for an impending farewell.
On one particular Friday night, they made a list of Harlow’s favorite activities to enjoy over the weekend, planning to help her pass on peacefully on Monday. Just then, the phone rang!
Dr. Amy Lam, who had previously treated Harlow, reached out to Alana. She diagnosed Harlow with chronic neutrophilic enteritis, a rare form of IBD in canines.
The vet explained that Harlow had a reaction to animal proteins and required a vegetarian diet.
After her first vegetarian meal, Harlow began to thrive. Although her family expected a gradual recovery, Harlow amazed everyone with her swift improvement.
