Moose is a shining example that shelter dogs are not undesirable! With a bullet lodged in her lung and a rough start to life, this lovable Pittie had one goal: to become everyone’s best friend. Sadly, Moose was on the brink of euthanasia due to the stigma attached to her barking at another dog. Fortunately, an extra kennel saved her just in time, allowing Micky to find her story and open her heart to adoption.
Beating A False Stigma

When Micky discovered Moose’s impending fate, she acted quickly, applying for the dog without hesitation. Moose was soon on a bus from Houston, Texas, and five days later, she met her new savior in Virginia. The unfortunate label of “behavioral euthanasia” for Moose stemmed solely from her barking at another dog. Micky shared, “It’s really sad because she was behavioral euthanasia and the only thing I saw in all of her staff notes was that she barked at another dog.” To make matters worse, Moose had endured being shot and had an abortion in the past. Micky revealed, “She had been shot (I only know this because we saw the bullet on her X-rays, it can’t be removed but multiple vets have said it does not affect her or put her in danger), had heartworms & was treated when I got her, and had an abortion.” Despite her difficult start, Moose was unjustly stigmatized, drawing Micky to help her rebuild her life.
“I’m shocked that this dog, considering how terrible her first year of life was, wants to be everyone’s best friend,” said Micky.
Moose – The Sweetest Lovebug Ever

Initially expecting Moose to require significant effort, Micky was pleasantly surprised by her easygoing nature. It was evident that Moose had prior ownership, as she was already potty trained and familiar with household rules. Her temperament was sweet and gentle, completely contrary to what one might expect from a dog marked for euthanasia. Moose thrived on human and canine companionship, quickly picking up new skills, inspiring Micky to train her as a therapy dog. Micky said, “Despite all of this she has been the best girl ever and is learning more each day. She has come so far and was the best thing that could have happened to me.”
Multipurpose Service Pittie In Training

Micky, who has mobility issues, identified Moose as the perfect candidate for a certified therapy dog due to her exceptional intuition. She noted, “Usually, she sleeps by my legs, but if I’m having a flare, and really, really don’t feel good, she’ll sleep up by my head.” Currently, Moose is in the process of obtaining her OFA certificates, and Micky is confident that this extraordinary shelter dog will flourish as a therapy dog. After a year and a half together, Moose has grown into an integral part of Micky’s family, with their bond growing stronger every day as they embark on joyful adventures!
