While dropping off his kid at school, a man spotted Sugar Snap, a local puppy, emaciated and pleading for help on the roadside. Without hesitation, he stopped, got out of his car, and carefully rescued the dog, driving him to the nearest Chicago police station, hoping for guidance.
The police quickly contacted the local animal shelter about Sugar Snap’s plight. Following instructions, they placed him in their vehicle and transported him to Chicago Animal Care and Control.
Long Road To Recovery

After assessment by the shelter’s medical team, it was determined that he should be transferred to One Tail at a Time. Upon arrival, the staff conducted a thorough examination and discovered that Sugar Snap couldn’t walk or stand on his own. However, after being offered some delicious food, he showed signs of resilience, indicating he was not ready to give up!

They began his treatment funded by generous supporters, where he received a transfusion that improved his vitals and boosted his energy. “His vet team is adjusting his treatment and ensuring he stays comfortable – he’s in good hands,” One Tail at a Time shared on Facebook.

Although Sugar Snap faced a challenging night with fluctuating blood pressure and glucose, he rebounded significantly after receiving the blood transfusion and food. “Some values dropped on Sunday, which was concerning, prompting his veterinary team to devise a plan that included an NG tube and a blood transfusion,” they updated in their post.
With time, as Sugar Snap’s health improved, the vet team removed his feeding tube, hoping he would continue to gain weight independently. To everyone’s delight, he did!
His determination not only resulted in weight gain but also in him learning to walk again.
Seeing his impressive progress, the staff knew he was ready for a foster home. “After three weeks, Sugar Snap left the emergency hospital walking independently. He will be fostered by one of his caring veterinarians, where he’ll continue to grow healthy and strong,” shared the rescue on Facebook.
New Life
Experiencing a loving home transformed Sugar Snap into a joyous pup with health improvements that turned him into the handsome dog he always was. “We’re celebrating two weeks in foster and can happily report that he’s weighing nearly 34 lbs, is more mobile than ever, and has even learned to beg for food. Can you believe this is the same dog?” they wrote.

In less than a month, Sugar Snap transformed completely, weighing 40 lbs—double his weight when rescued at 19 lbs! His foster mom, impressed by his progress, decided not to let him go and adopted him instead.
Now, he lives his best life, surrounded by loving humans and playful furry siblings. “Sugar now has a dog brother, Fitz, and a cat brother, Noodle. With both his mom and dad being veterinarians, we couldn’t have wished for a happier ending for this fortunate Chicago stray,” concluded One Tail at a Time in their update on Facebook.
