California Veterinarian Stunned When Owners Request Euthanasia for 18-Year-Old Poodle Due to ‘Stupidity’

Date:

Human cruelty often knows no boundaries, particularly when it involves the furry creatures whose sole purpose is to bring joy to our lives. How can people be so cruel? I will never understand. Yet again, my heart shatters while writing about a little dog named Figgy.

Escaping The Cruelty

At the age of 18, Figgy, a Toy Poodle, was surrendered to a vet to be euthanized. This little black dog, also blind and toothless, sought love and affection in his final days. Instead, he found himself abandoned—scared and lonely. When the vet staff inquired the reason for euthanization, the owner coldly replied, “He’s stupid.” Shock and disbelief filled the clinic at such heartlessness.

The clinic staff quickly decided they would not euthanize Figgy after examining him. Although he was blind, arthritic, toothless, and 18 years old, he was relatively healthy for his age. Figgy’s life continued when the vet clinic reached out to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco. They were eager to provide care for the scared, confused dog.

Sherri Franklin, the founder of Muttville, took Figgy into her home, stating, “He was a total love bug and slept with me curled up in my armpit. I just loved him.” Fortunately, Figgy found his forever home shortly after arriving at the rescue. In just four days, a loving family reached out.

An experienced hospice owner, Eileen, eagerly contacted the shelter after learning about Figgy and believed he was the right fit for her household, which was unlike his former owners. “He’ll be our fifth hospice angel,” Eileen said. Figgy finally found a warm, safe, and loving home where he would receive the affection he deserved in his final days. “I just couldn’t help but think that these precious angels had given their love and loyalty to someone their entire lives, and certainly didn’t deserve to die alone in a shelter. They deserved love, comfort, and security for whatever time they had left, and I knew that I could provide that,” Eileen shared.

We are thrilled that this sweet, elderly gentleman has found his special person who will love and care for him until the very end.
