Gilbert has been a true warrior his entire life! Despite his small stature, this proud Chi has never lost his sparkle. His resilience is undoubtedly what has kept him on his paws throughout his challenges. He has faced homelessness multiple times, even getting surrendered to a shelter just three days after being adopted due to jealousy from another dog. Yet, just when it seemed that this senior would never experience family love again, Aimee walked into his life!
Gilbert’s Been A Fighter His Entire Life
Aimee Burton, a dog trainer from San Diego, California, fell in love with Gilbert upon seeing him on a shelter website. However, he had already been adopted by another family. Just three days later, she received a call that would change Gilbert’s life; the family who adopted him decided they didn’t want him anymore because their other dog was jealous. Without hesitation, Aimee rushed to bring Gilbert home.
Later, Aimee learned that Gilbert was found as a stray in Lancaster, California. His backstory remains unclear, but it is nothing short of a miracle that he survived being homeless for so long. Weighing in at just 4.8 pounds, he has shown remarkable tenacity as a fighter!
“There are coyotes, foxes, and lots of wildlife out there. The fact that he survived is pretty incredible,” Aimee remarks.
From Being Unwanted To A Forever Home
Initially, Gilbert remained reserved and shy for a few days. Given his past, it was understandable that he lacked trust. However, Aimee was patient. She gradually introduced him to her other dogs, ensuring he felt comfortable. Before long, he began to socialize and reveal his true personality for the first time in a new home!
Despite his age, Gilbert radiates happiness and enthusiasm for the life he has always desired! Although he faces some health challenges, including a bad knee, a collapsing trachea, and dental issues, he remains the proud man of the house. Gilbert’s charm attracts every dog around him; despite not having the stamina of his younger siblings, he confidently embraces his place in the pack. If Aimee takes the others for a walk, he often stands on the porch with a wistful look, but he quickly returns to his spirited self when they come back!
