One of the most heartwarming moments for a shelter dog is on their adoption day, and S’mores is a shining example of that!
When this Anatolian Shepherd realized he was headed to a forever home with his new family, his joy was absolutely contagious! He charmed the hearts of everyone at the shelter with his beaming smile and immediate affection for his new humans.
However, in a twist of fate, just an hour later, this excited pup faced a heartbreak due to an unusual reason!
A Brief Moment Of Happiness
S’mores was rescued from the streets as a stray and has been an absolute sweetheart since joining the Stanislaus Animal Services Agency in Modesto, California.
According to Nadia Borisova, one of the volunteers, his rescuer labeled him as a “very loving and good dog” upon bringing him in, and S’mores lived up to that description right up to his adoption day.
When a family arrived to adopt this one-year-old pup, S’mores lit up with excitement as if he understood he was finally going home. His smile never wavered during the entire visit, and despite meeting new people, he acted as if they were family.
But then, devastation struck!
Just one hour later, the family returned S’mores to the shelter, claiming he was simply too big, and left him with his caregivers.
Heather Gee, another dedicated volunteer at the shelter, shared a heartbreaking video on TikTok capturing S’mores’ adoption experience.

“S’mores got adopted today, BUT…was returned after about 1 hour due to “being too big”. S’mores was noted as being extremely friendly and loving by the people who originally brought him into the shelter as a stray. Too bad his great personality wasn’t enough,” Heather shared in a Facebook post.
This sweet Anatolian Shepherd weighs 79 pounds, which is far from large compared to the average size of his breed. According to the American Kennel Club, male Anatolian Shepherds typically weigh between 110 and 150 pounds.
A New Chance
Despite his initial upset, S’mores didn’t have to wait long for an uplifting turn of events!
Just a few days after being returned to kennel life, he was transferred to a non-profit rescue called @notyouraveragerescueinc on Instagram.
“S’mores will be heading to his foster home where he can relax, receive some training, and most importantly, enjoy the love and care he deserves,” posted Advocate Paws, an organization dedicated to networking shelter animals to find them forever homes.
Thanks to his incredibly kind rescuers, S’mores is now set to experience a spacious foster environment and learn what it means to be part of a caring family. When the time is right, there’s no doubt this wonderful boy will find his forever happiness!
