California Man Discovers Abandoned Family in Orchard and Takes Swift Action

Date:

While driving through an orchard in Fresno, California, a Good Samaritan encountered a heart-wrenching scene. An abandoned and heartbroken dog was on the side of the road, seemingly in need of help. When the man approached, he was surprised to find the dog protecting seven little puppies.

Wanting to rescue the entire family, he realized that he needed another approach, as the frightened mom was suspicious of him.

Winning The Mother’s Trust

The man reached out to Helga Weiss, president of Paw Squad 559 and co-founder of California Spay and Neuter, sharing the abandoned family’s plight. Weiss agreed to assist and said she would collect the family the following morning.

Before leaving, he left food and water for the mother and her puppies, marking their location. That night, Weiss couldn’t stop thinking about the brave mama, trying to protect her babies from harm. “All I could think about was the puppies and the poor mom trying to defend her children,” she later told The Dodo.

The next morning, Weiss hurried to the location. Upon arrival, she called to the dogs and felt heartbroken witnessing the betrayal they had suffered. Surprisingly, the dogs recognized Weiss and approached her with wagging tails and hopeful eyes.

However, when Mother Goose, as she was named, saw Weiss, she became barking and protective, warning her to stay away. During her visit, Weiss met a ranch worker who had been feeding the family for several days; without his help, they would have starved. The worker shared that Mother Goose had eight puppies, but tragically, one had been taken by a coyote, which made Weiss empathize with the mother’s cautious nature.

Mother Goose And Babies Feel Relieved

Weiss then sat next to Mother Goose and began feeding her sausages to win her trust. After two and a half hours, the mother finally realized that Weiss meant no harm and allowed her to pick up the puppies and place them in her car.

As she cuddled Mother Goose, Weiss began to cry. When the mother noticed the tears, she lovingly licked them away. “As soon as I picked her up and loaded her into my car, she actually started licking the tears off my face. It was adorable,” Weiss reflected.

Thriving In A Foster Home

Save-A-Mutt, a rescue organization in Stanwood, Washington, took the family into their care, providing them with a loving foster home. Shortly after their arrival, their foster mom, Christie West, noticed something was off with the puppies and quickly rushed them to the vet.

The puppies were diagnosed with parvo, an extremely contagious and potentially fatal virus. Fortunately, they received new treatment funded by Save-A-Mutt. Once they started to recover, the puppies returned home, where foster mom West provided around-the-clock care. Thanks to her dedication, they began to thrive.

The pups were named Itsy Bitsy, Star Light, Little Bo Peep, Twinkle Twinkle, Humpty Dumpty, Peter Piper, and Miss Muffet. Now healthy, they are enjoying their puppyhood.

In four weeks, the puppies will move to Save-A-Mutt in Washington, where they will begin their search for forever homes. Until then, their foster mom will continue to shower them with love and affection. Thanks to compassionate humans, Mother Goose and her puppies are set to start a new life filled with the love they deserve.
