Hope For Paws often takes on wild and challenging rescue missions, but one particular operation proved to be exceptionally difficult. Late at night, Hope For Paws, California received an urgent email about faint kitten cries coming from behind a homeowner’s wall.
Eldad, the rescue organization’s founder, along with rescuers Loreta and JoAnn, rushed out to investigate, unaware that this would become one of their most trying rescues, as they found no immediate signs of life.
Babies In The Wall
Upon arrival around midnight, they learned the kitten cries had ceased eight hours earlier, raising fears that the kittens might not have survived. “After eight hours without making a sound, I feared they had already passed away,” Eldad expressed. The rescue posed a complex dilemma: they needed permission to cut into the wall, a serious undertaking without any signs of life.
“This rescue was seriously challenging… without any indication of life, we had to ask the homeowner to destroy his property,” they noted in a Facebook post.
Equipped with masks and flashlights, the team began making holes in the wall, trying to offset the discomfort of destroying the homeowner’s property by sharing stories of odd things they had discovered in similar situations. Initially, they only saw old newspapers, so they drilled a larger hole, but still could not spot any kittens and were nearly set to leave empty-handed.
Just as they were about to call it quits, Loreta spotted movement—a sign that the kittens were alive! They quickly drilled another larger hole and managed to extract two tiny kittens, approximately two weeks old.
“We thoroughly checked that there were no more kittens in the wall,” the rescue team confirmed.
A Wonderful Rescue
How the kittens ended up in the wall remains a mystery, but the rescuers speculated that they might have fallen from the attic.
They stated: “We believe they fell from the attic to the ground (15ft), and once that happened, the mom relocated the siblings and was never seen again by the homeowner.”
Once rescued, JoAnn provided the kittens with sugar water to elevate their glucose levels, which played a crucial role in their survival. “She became their mom, and for the next eight weeks, she bottle-fed them, kept them clean and warm, and the result is just amazing,” the team commented.
The female kitten was named Blondie, and the male was called Dagwood. The Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats offered to foster the two kittens and help find them a forever home. Although there is no official confirmation, it’s heartwarming to think these two adorable kittens have found a loving home where they can thrive.
