As the couple hiked deeper into the California woods, they were unaware of the adorable surprise that awaited them. Suddenly, they heard a strange noise coming from the creek and decided to investigate.
Upon reaching the creek, they were astonished to find a mama dog giving birth to cute little puppies.
A Loving Foster Home

The hikers immediately took the mama dog, Ruby, along with her three puppies to a local shelter. Eight days later, Hopalong Animal Rescue, a non-profit animal rescue based in Oakland, California, welcomed them. They called Thom McCallum, one of the rescue’s foster parents, and asked him to care for mama dog Ruby and her puppies: Jax, Tito, and Kirby. When McCallum arrived, he observed that Ruby was timid and exhausted.

Welcoming them into his home in Berkeley, he ensured they felt safe. Ruby was relieved to see her pups finally enjoying the warmth of a home. As an incredible mom, she was very focused on taking care of her little ones. Though McCallum was eager to play with the cute pups, he had to wait until they finished their much-needed naps.
Spending time with Ruby, McCallum worked to bond with her. Ruby accepted his strokes, and they often engaged in playful activities together.
Gaining Ruby’s Trust

As Ruby observed McCallum’s care for her and her pups, she began to lower her guard. Her foster dad was thrilled to see the lovely dog starting to trust him.
“Ruby is finally asleep in my lap, and my heart is so full. The end of such a lovely day I didn’t expect,” McCallum shared on his Instagram.
After three weeks, Jax, Kirby, and Tito grew more energetic and excited to explore their surroundings. They often showered their foster dad with affection, licking his face in delight. McCallum cherished every moment with Ruby and the puppies. During walks, he would pull them in a wagon and they thrived while playing outside.
Ruby And Her Pups Get Their Happy Ending

As time went on, Ruby became more attached to McCallum, wanting to be by his side constantly. They formed a strong and unbreakable bond, and McCallum realized he couldn’t bear the thought of being separated from Ruby.
“She loves it here. I love being with her, and I think I’m the best home for her.”
When Ruby’s puppies became old enough, they found their forever homes, living their best lives in California. McCallum’s neighbor adopted Tito, allowing the sweet pup to spend much time with his mama, Ruby.
McCallum and Ruby share a profound love for one another. He continues to foster with Hopalong Animal Rescue, where Ruby aids in nurturing other fur babies. It fills my heart with joy to see Ruby and her puppies receiving the loving families they deserve, safe and cherished.
