One of the biggest smiles you can witness on a shelter dog is the one on their adoption day, and S’mores is a prime example! When this Anatolian Shepherd realized he was finally entering a forever home with his new family, he couldn’t contain his joy. He instantly melted the hearts of everyone at the facility with his joyful demeanor and affectionate nature.
However, in a bizarre twist, this enthusiastic pup’s dream was shattered within just an hour.
A Brief Moment Of Happiness

S’mores, a stray dog rescued from the streets, has been a sweetheart since he arrived at the Stanislaus Animal Services Agency in Modesto, California. Nadia Borisova, a volunteer at SASA, shared that S’mores was described as a “very loving and good dog” by those who found him, a description he lived up to until his adoption day.

When a family finally came to adopt this one-year-old pup, S’mores perked up as if he understood he was going to a forever home. He couldn’t stop smiling the entire time and behaved like a long-time family dog, even though he had just met his adopters. Unfortunately, less than an hour later, heartbreak struck. The family returned S’mores to the shelter, claiming he was too big for them.
Heather Gee, a dedicated volunteer at the shelter, shared a heart-wrenching video on TikTok showcasing S’mores’ adoption day.

“S’mores got adopted today, BUT…was returned after about 1 hour due to “being too big”. He was noted as extremely friendly and loving by those who originally brought him to the shelter as a stray. It’s unfortunate that his wonderful personality wasn’t enough,” Heather wrote in a Facebook post.
This loving Anatolian Shepherd weighs 79 pounds, which is small in comparison to the average size for his breed. According to the American Kennel Club, males typically weigh between 110 and 150 pounds.
A New Chance

Despite his initial confusion and heartbreak, S’mores didn’t wait long for exciting news! Just a few days after being returned to kennel life, he was safely transferred to a non-profit rescue called @notyouraveragerescueinc. Advocate Paws, an organization that helps shelter animals find forever homes, shared, “S’mores will be going to his foster where he can decompress, receive training, and most importantly, get the TLC he deserves.”
Thanks to his kind-hearted rescuers, S’mores will finally experience a spacious foster home and learn what it’s like to be part of a loving family! He will undoubtedly find his happiness — forever!
