Such was the case for Jessica Sattelberger and her partner, Adam, who experienced heartbreak after their rescue dog, Myrtle, succumbed to terminal cancer. With heavy hearts, they made a promise to honor Myrtle’s memory.
In tribute, they decided to help another dog in need: Shmoo!
Jessica And Adam Kept Their Promise
Jessica, a volunteer at a Los Angeles shelter, has always had a heart for dogs. When she and Adam received word of a dog slated for euthanasia at a Queens shelter, they wasted no time.
The couple promptly applied to adopt a four-year-old dog named Shmoo.
“When Myrtle passed away, we promised her that we would help another dog, and upon learning that this girl was at risk of euthanasia, we knew we had to step in,” Jessica shared in an Instagram video.
Shmoo, initially nervous and timid, eventually started feeling at home. While bonding proved challenging at first, the love and patience from Jessica and Adam paid off.
Shmoo, the gentle giant with a touch of concern in her eyes, gradually began to accept pets but struggled with trusting her owners fully. It was clear that she required time to adjust to her new surroundings, and Jessica and Adam were committed to giving her that time.
“She’ll have a yard and a house, and two people who already love her. I think Myrtle would approve,” Jessica remarked.
The couple dedicated themselves to ensuring Shmoo’s comfort, and soon, things began to shift…
Shmoo Gets To Live A New Life
As Shmoo’s confidence grew, so did her affection for Jessica and Adam. No longer hiding, she started to thrive in their attention.
Her newfound comfort meant she loved lounging on the couch with the couple, finally thriving after her turbulent past, which filled them with joy and appreciation.
Over time, she embraced her new environment, becoming a local favorite with her unique and fashionable appearance during walks.
Ultimately, she was able to experience the simple pleasures of being a dog.
Currently, Shmoo faces challenges with hip dysplasia, impacting her mobility during walks. She’s on pain medication and receives the utmost care from her devoted owners.
Nevertheless, Shmoo radiates happiness in her new life. She finally belongs to a family that promises never to abandon her, just as her late brother Myrtle experienced.
