Big Dog Returns to Shelter with Separation Anxiety, Now Finds His Forever Pack

Date:

Jager, a stunning mix of Great Dane and Saint Bernard, initially joined Idaho Saint Bernard Rescue after his owner relinquished him due to personal circumstances.

He was quickly adopted by a lovely family who cherished him deeply.

However, things took a turn when Jager began to suffer from severe separation anxiety, which resulted in some destructive behaviors.

Despite training attempts, it was determined that Jager would be much happier in a pack environment.

This ultimately led to the best resolution, as Jager found his true home.

When Jager returned to the Idaho shelter, the staff was at a loss for what to do next.

He needed a pack setting, but where could they find one?

That’s when they thought of a potential guardian. Lee Asher operates a non-profit sanctuary named “The Asher House”, located in Estacada, Oregon, which boasts a vast area suitable for the large pack of rescued animals he has cared for.

“We contacted Lee at The Asher House because we were unsure of our options… and we were overjoyed and immensely grateful when Lee agreed to take Jager,” shared Idaho Saint Bernard Rescue in their post.

Upon hearing Jager’s story, Asher was unable to resist providing a home for him. He truly believed Jager deserved another chance and was certain he could offer the assistance and care needed.

“This is the best outcome for Jager because he will never be alone again, and it feels as though he has always belonged to Lee’s pack. We are so thankful to Lee for his incredible generosity and for doing so much for so many dogs, including Jager, who is now a beloved member of the family,” the shelter noted.

Jager was then taken to The Asher House in Oregon, where he met his new dad and the rest of the canine crew.

Jager was gradually introduced to his new expansive pack, and fortunately, he was warmly welcomed by all.

“He appears to be quite at ease. It’s been a lot for him in just a single day – a long road trip, encountering so many new faces, meeting numerous new dogs, and experiencing many new scents. He’s adapting beautifully,” Asher observed.

Although there’s a considerable journey ahead for Jager filled with learning and adjustment, Asher is optimistic that he has found the right place.

“People really need to understand that a dog of his size with separation anxiety behaves quite differently than a small dog with similar issues. They can and will cause significant damage to a house because they are powerful animals equipped with sharp teeth. If you’re thinking of bringing in a dog with separation anxiety, be prepared for the responsibility,” added Asher.

While training and enrolling in the best courses can be beneficial, sometimes the most effective remedy is dedicating quality time to the dog and providing him with ample mental and physical stimulation.

Fortunately, with such a large pack at Asher’s, Jager will receive plentiful amounts of everything he needs – both mental and physical enrichment.
