As a man trekked along a narrow, slippery trail on Lookout Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona, he had no idea of the unexpected sight awaiting him.
Focus shifted to the trail when suddenly he spotted a pair of amber eyes flickering in a small crevice in the mountainside.
To his shock, he realized that the haunting, sorrowful gaze belonged to a weary and frightened dog.
Her fur was a dull brown, allowing her to blend seamlessly with her surroundings. Without those captivating eyes, the hiker might have passed her by unnoticed.
The poor animal had lost all her strength, her emaciated form signaling she was on the brink of surrender.
Rescuing The Exhausted Pup
When the dog noticed the hiker nearing her, she lifted her head and gazed at him. A spark of hope flickered in her heart, yearning to be saved.
Once the hiker reassured the pup, he reached out to the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) for assistance.
The emergency animal medical technicians from AHS, Ruthie Jesus and Tracey Miiller, quickly made their way to the site.
The compassionate hiker remained with the dog, who was later named Bright Eyes, for nearly two hours until the rescuers arrived.
“… She camouflaged so well that the complainant decided to name her Bright Eyes, as that was the only feature he noticed when hiking past her,” Jesus mentioned in a video recorded by AHS after the rescue.
Even though the dog was still fearful, she allowed the kind-hearted individuals to help her.
The medical technicians assessed Bright Eyes’ condition. In addition to being severely dehydrated, she had injuries on her paws and a wound on her hindquarters.
The rescue team recognized her gentle nature as Bright Eyes allowed them to pet her head.
However, because of her fear, the poor pup couldn’t budge from her hiding spot, necessitating the rescuers to gently coax her out.
Unable to walk due to exhaustion, her rescuers took turns carrying her down the mountainside.
Bright Eyes relished being held, feeling safe and at ease in their arms.
The despair and fear faded from her eyes, replaced by gratitude for the generous souls who came to her rescue.
The pup realized she was finally receiving the assistance she had longed for.
The Sweet Dog Gets The Help She Needed
No one can say for certain how Bright Eyes ended up stranded on the mountain.
Her rescuers felt overjoyed to find her just in time.
“We were thrilled to have found her. She was extremely dehydrated. It seems like she had been up there for several days, likely on her last leg, and this Good Samaritan truly saved her life,” Jesus remarked.
Bright Eyes was transported to a veterinary hospital where she received fluids, medication, and antibiotics. She also began treatment for her gastrointestinal problems.
Estimated to be around two years old, the rescuers are optimistic about her future.
Once she fully recovers, this lovely Arizona girl will be ready to seek out her forever home.
This sweet pup dreams of finding loving guardians to start a new life with.
