While shelters are not intended to be permanent homes for dogs, unfortunately, some canines find themselves spending their lives behind kennel bars, eagerly awaiting a chance for adoption. Lucia is one such dog who waited far too long for a chance at happiness; she spent eleven years observing other shelter dogs find loving families while she remained behind.
Lucia’s Life In The Shelter

Lucia was just a year old when she arrived at Villalobos Rescue Center in Louisiana. The staff welcomed her with open arms, providing love that aimed to help her overcome a challenging past.
Liz Scollo, a dog trainer at the shelter, was struck by Lucia’s charm and couldn’t understand why no one had adopted her yet. Despite the shelter’s efforts to find her a home through advertisements and meet-and-greets, Lucia remained unchosen, partly due to her difficulty in getting along with other dogs.
Then, at last, Lucia’s enduring hope paid off when Scollo decided to adopt her. The overjoyed pup realized she was finally leaving the shelter and bade farewell to the staff who had become her family over the years.
Lucia Finds True Happiness

Once settled with Scollo, Lucia’s joy was palpable as she explored her new home, wagging her tail and thoroughly enjoying her newfound freedom after eleven long years in the shelter. She embraced everything with enthusiasm, from sniffing the furniture to leaping onto couches.

Now living her best life in New York, Lucia, now twelve and a half years old, remains full of energy, often bringing to mind the spirit of a puppy. She delights in running freely in the yard and enjoys cuddling with her beloved human, reveling in the comfort of her new reality.

Scollo hopes Lucia’s heartwarming journey motivates more people to adopt senior dogs, giving them the joy they truly deserve. A heartfelt thank you to Scollo for making Lucia’s dream a reality and bringing unparalleled happiness into her life.
