Throughout my time writing about rescue dogs, a recurring theme has emerged: older dogs are often overlooked in favor of their younger counterparts. While this preference is understandable—who doesn’t find puppies adorable?—it’s crucial to remember that senior dogs also yearn for love and a caring home.
People need to broaden their horizons when choosing a pet from the shelter and consider adopting more senior dogs. We’ll focus on one such dog, who spent countless days at the shelter without anyone to adopt him.
The Sweetest Rescue Dog

Barney spent a long time at the Darlington County Humane Society in South Carolina, hoping someone would come for him, but sadly, that never happened. Despite no one showing interest in taking him home, he maintained his joyful spirit through every disappointment. The staff would often shower him with affection whenever someone chose another dog, trying to comfort him during his wait for a forever family.

According to Wendy Ransome in an interview with The Dodo, “He enjoys playing with other dogs, but what he loves the most is spending time with people. Barney is a happy, friendly, and affectionate dog.” Tragically, many potential adopters were deterred by Barney’s size, unaware of how friendly and playful he truly is. Wendy emphasized that he is one of the most sociable dogs at the shelter, eager to engage with anyone willing to play.
A New Chance For Barney

In a Facebook post, the shelter staff wrote:
“Barney longs for attention. When you visit his kennel, he whines, begging for you to take him out. He’ll press himself tightly against the gate for you to reach in and love him. If you sit with him, he’s delighted; if you take him out to play, he’s over the moon.”
Despite many disappointments during his time in the shelter, Barney radiated optimism. In February, as he remained without a family, his best friend Lincoln encouraged others to adopt him.

To enhance his chances of finding a home, the rescue team at Paws Around The Pee Dee took Barney in, giving him a new place to await adoption. While it’s uncertain if he found his forever home, one thing is clear: Barney is a joyful dog with so much love to offer and truly deserves the best in life.
