One day, the workers at Barrow County Animal Control encountered a little puppy believed to be the runt of the litter. Due to his open fontanelle, his mother continually rejected him. In hopes of helping, his owners decided to surrender him to the shelter for proper care.
Sadly, the pup arrived in poor condition, severely dehydrated and malnourished. Vets suspected he may have even had a seizure during transport, necessitating swift and attentive care.
Hang In There, Sweet Boy
The medical team provided the puppy with all the necessary medications and created a cozy bed for him to decompress. Unfortunately, his condition did not improve. He struggled to keep his food down, experienced multiple seizures, and had difficulty breathing. The vets decided on an oxygen chamber for him, naming him Stewie and monitoring him closely for any required assistance.
Eventually, Stewie began to improve; he was able to keep his formula down, allowing the doctors to feed him every two hours to ensure he was hydrated and nourished without overwhelming his stomach. After conducting numerous tests, they determined he had fully developed roundworms. Although this diagnosis was challenging, the vets felt relieved to finally identify the issue.
Unfortunate News
The vets quickly started him on deworming medication, which helped rid him of the parasites. Despite administering all necessary treatments, they understood that his recovery was not guaranteed, but they were determined not to give up. Stewie received around-the-clock care, overflowing with love and affection.
After six challenging days, Stewie continued to struggle; at one point, he even stopped breathing. Fortunately, a vet was able to resuscitate him, giving him another chance at life.
For days, this sweet boy continued to vomit and suffer seizures. Tragically, he stopped breathing once more and this time, the vets weren’t able to save him. The entire Barrow County Shelter was left devastated.
Yet, they found peace in knowing that Stewie crossed the rainbow bridge feeling loved. His heart-wrenching story serves as a poignant reminder of the vital roles that rescuers and vets play. While they strive to help animals in need, they are not infallible.
